Vasco da Gama’s arrival on India’s Malabar Coast opened a direct sea route from Europe to Asian markets around the Cape of Good Hope. This new connection gave Portugal a practical alternative to long-established overland and Red Sea routes linked to Silk Road trade.
Portugal required many ships in the Indian Ocean to carry a cartaz (a naval trade pass), tightening control over who could trade and where they could sail. This licensing system helped Portugal tax and restrict maritime commerce, making sea routes more regulated and reinforcing Portuguese power over ocean-borne trade flows.
Portugal appointed Francisco de Almeida as its first viceroy in India and began building a more permanent imperial structure, later known as the Estado da Índia. Forts and officials helped Portugal protect shipping and pressure regional trade to move by sea rather than through older caravan-linked routes.
A major naval victory at Diu strengthened Portugal’s ability to contest Indian Ocean shipping with regional powers. With greater leverage at sea, Portugal could redirect valuable Asian goods away from routes tied to the Red Sea and overland networks and toward the Cape route to Europe.
The conquest of Goa provided Portugal with a major port and durable base for ships, soldiers, and administrators. From Goa, Portuguese forces expanded their ability to police sea lanes and influence where and how Asian trade moved, increasing competition for older overland-linked trading systems.
Taking Malacca strengthened Portuguese access to traffic through the Strait of Malacca, a major bottleneck for shipping between the Indian Ocean and East Asia. Control at this point supported Portuguese efforts to channel the spice trade through their sea-based network rather than through competing routes.
By consolidating power at Hormuz, Portugal increased its ability to shape commerce entering and leaving the Persian Gulf. This mattered for Silk Road-connected exchange because Gulf ports and inland caravan routes linked Persia and Central Asia to wider Eurasian trade.
Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Zaragoza to settle competing claims in Asia, complementing earlier Atlantic divisions. By clarifying Portugal’s position in key parts of Asian maritime commerce, the treaty supported continued investment in sea routes that competed with overland-connected trade.
As Portugal tried to block or pressure shipping at the entrances to the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, the Ottoman Empire had strong incentives to protect routes feeding Mediterranean markets. These clashes show how Portuguese sea power competed directly with older trade channels that interacted with overland Silk Road networks.
In the early 1600s, disputes and conflict increased between Safavid Iran and Portugal in the Persian Gulf region. These pressures highlighted limits to Portuguese control and encouraged alternative partnerships and routes that reduced Portuguese leverage over Gulf-connected trade into the interior.
Safavid forces, supported by the English East India Company, captured Hormuz and ended a central pillar of Portuguese power in the Persian Gulf. The loss weakened Portugal’s ability to steer Gulf commerce and showed how new European rivals and regional states could reshape trade patterns affecting overland-connected exchange.
After a long siege, Dutch forces and their regional allies captured Malacca from Portugal. This marked a major shift in who controlled a critical maritime gateway, and it underscored the longer-term outcome: Portuguese expansion had helped move high-value Eurasian trade toward sea routes, but Portugal could not keep a monopoly as other powers took over the same ocean network.
