In 224 CE, Ardashir I defeated the last Arsacid (Parthian) king and established the Sasanian Empire with its power center in Mesopotamia and Iran. This created a strong state positioned between the Roman-Byzantine world in the west and Central Asia in the east. Sasanian control of key passes and river crossings helped shape who could move goods and armies along major Silk Road corridors.
By the late 230s, Sasanian forces took important frontier cities such as Nisibis and Harran in northern Mesopotamia. These cities sat on routes linking the Iranian plateau to Syria and Anatolia, making them valuable both for defense and for taxing and supervising commerce. Holding them strengthened Sasanian leverage over westward movement of luxury goods, including silk.
In 260, Shapur I defeated the Romans at Edessa and captured Emperor Valerian. The victory signaled that the Sasanian state could dominate parts of the Roman eastern frontier at key moments. Military success in this zone mattered for trade because caravan routes and river traffic depended on stable control of forts, cities, and customs points.
After Rome defeated the Sasanian king Narseh, a peace settlement (commonly dated to 299) set new frontier terms. Later summaries of the treaty report that Nisibis was designated as the only legal place for trade between the two empires. This kind of rule let governments monitor merchants, collect duties, and restrict strategic goods moving across the border.
In 363, after Emperor Julian’s failed campaign, the new Roman emperor Jovian agreed to a settlement with Shapur II that transferred Nisibis and other territories to the Sasanians. Regaining Nisibis shifted the main customs gate on the Mesopotamian frontier into Sasanian hands. This strengthened Sasanian ability to steer and tax traffic between the Mediterranean world and Iran.
In 484, the Sasanian king Peroz I suffered a catastrophic defeat and was killed fighting the Hephthalites (often called the “White Huns”) near Balkh. The loss weakened Sasanian authority in eastern Iran and exposed routes through Khorasan and Bactria. With the east unstable, controlling Silk Road passages became harder and more dependent on diplomacy and tribute.
Khosrow I (r. 531–579) came to the throne after decades of internal conflict and external pressure. His reign is widely treated as a high point of Sasanian state capacity, helping the empire project power on both the western and eastern frontiers. Stronger administration and security made it easier to protect roads, regulate markets, and support long-distance trade.
In 532, Byzantium and the Sasanians signed a peace treaty intended to end the Iberian War, often called the “Perpetual” or “Eternal” Peace. Even though it did not last, it temporarily lowered the risk of major war along key Caucasus and Mesopotamian routes. Periods of peace generally helped merchants by reducing raids and making border procedures more predictable.
From 541 to 562, Byzantium and the Sasanians fought the Lazic War over Lazica (western Georgia), a region tied to Caucasus mountain routes and Black Sea connections. Control here affected who could move armies and goods through the Caucasus and who could influence local rulers. The long conflict ended with a peace settlement that kept Lazica aligned with Byzantium while requiring payments to Persia.
In 568, a Turkic embassy reached Constantinople seeking direct trade ties, reflecting tensions over control of Silk Road commerce. This diplomacy shows that steppe empires and Sogdian-linked traders looked for alternatives to routes where Sasanian authorities could tax or restrict goods. The episode highlights how Sasanian “control” often meant negotiating with powerful neighbors, not simply commanding the whole route.
The Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628 was a prolonged, high-cost conflict that devastated frontier regions and strained the Sasanian state. After major setbacks, Khosrow II was deposed in a palace coup and executed in 628. The resulting instability reduced the empire’s ability to police corridors and collect revenue from trade across Mesopotamia and Iran.
In November 636, Arab forces defeated the Sasanians at the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah, a turning point that opened the way toward the Sasanian capital region. Losing Iraq meant losing major urban hubs and river-and-road junctions that connected west–east trade. Control over taxes, checkpoints, and protection services along these passages began to shift away from the Sasanian state.
In early 637, Arab forces besieged and captured Ctesiphon, the long-standing imperial center on the Tigris. With the capital and its surrounding administrative heartland lost, the Sasanians could no longer reliably command the main Mesopotamian crossings and supply routes. This accelerated the collapse of centralized oversight of key Silk Road-linked corridors in the west.
Yazdegerd III, the last Sasanian king, was killed in 651 after years of flight and failed attempts to regroup. His death is widely treated as the end of the Sasanian Empire as a political structure capable of controlling routes and border passages. With the dynasty gone, authority over Iran’s major trade arteries shifted to new powers under early Islamic rule.
