Sogdian letters reveal merchant communities in China
Labels: Dunhuang letters, Sogdian merchantsA set of early 4th-century Sogdian letters—found near Dunhuang—records the worries, prices, and family networks of Sogdian traders living in Chinese cities and oasis towns. They show that long-distance commerce depended on diaspora ties (partners, agents, and relatives) as much as on roads and caravans. The letters also reflect how political violence in north China disrupted markets and stranded merchants far from home.
