Early in the 2nd century BCE, Chinese sources describe the Yuezhi as nomads living in what is now Gansu. After defeat by the Xiongnu and the death of their king, many Yuezhi moved west into Central Asia. This movement helped reshape politics along the route Zhang Qian would later travel.
In 138 BCE, Emperor Wu of Han dispatched the court official Zhang Qian to seek an alliance with the Yuezhi against the Xiongnu. The mission aimed to find partners beyond the Xiongnu-controlled frontier and gather reliable intelligence about the Western Regions. This was a major step toward regular state-to-state contact across Inner Asia.
Soon after leaving Han territory, Zhang Qian was captured by the Xiongnu and held for years, delaying the expedition. His detention shows how strongly the Xiongnu controlled movement and communication across the steppe corridors. Even so, Zhang eventually escaped and continued westward, keeping the mission alive.
After escaping captivity, Zhang Qian traveled through oasis routes toward Central Asia and reached Dayuan (in the Ferghana region). He gathered information on multiple kingdoms and trade goods, including notable horse breeds and crops. This intelligence helped the Han court think in practical terms about diplomacy, supplies, and long-distance exchange.
Zhang Qian ultimately met the Yuezhi, but they refused to move back east or join a war against the Xiongnu. By this time, they were more settled and had new interests in Central Asia. Although the alliance failed, Zhang’s report still gave the Han court its first detailed, state-level map of opportunities and risks to the west.
In 126 BCE, Zhang Qian returned to the Han capital and delivered his findings to Emperor Wu. His account described routes, political conditions, and potential partners across the Western Regions. The mission is often treated as a turning point because it connected Han policy to a broader Central Asian geography.
Zhang Qian’s missions (c. 138–126 BCE, with later follow-up diplomacy) did not achieve their original alliance goal, but they expanded the Han court’s knowledge and contacts across Central Asia. Combined with Han consolidation in the Hexi Corridor, this helped create conditions for sustained overland exchange later called the Silk Road. The long-term outcome was a more connected trade-and-diplomacy network linking China with the Western Regions.
After years of fighting, the Han gained stronger control over the Hexi Corridor, the key land passage linking the Chinese heartland to the far west. Control of this corridor reduced Xiongnu interference with travel and supply lines. It created safer conditions for future embassies and caravans moving toward the Western Regions.
In 119 BCE, the Han launched a major offensive into the north in the campaign known as the Battle of Mobei. The Han victory reduced Xiongnu pressure and helped the Han court pursue westward diplomacy with more confidence. Military outcomes and diplomatic missions reinforced each other: safer borders made long-distance travel more feasible.
In 119 BCE, Emperor Wu sent Zhang Qian west again, this time with a larger delegation and broader diplomatic goals. The mission focused on building relationships with states such as Wusun and others in Central Asia. Even when alliances were cautious, the repeated exchanges made contact more routine and less experimental.
In 111 BCE, the Han organized the newly controlled Hexi Corridor into commanderies, including Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiuquan, and Dunhuang. These were frontier administrations meant to support garrisons, farming colonies, and travel infrastructure. The commanderies helped turn exploration into an ongoing, state-supported route system.
Between 104 and 101 BCE, the Han fought Dayuan in the Ferghana Valley in a conflict later called the War of the Heavenly Horses. The Han victory strengthened its position with western states and improved access to high-quality cavalry horses. The war shows that the routes Zhang Qian described were becoming part of a larger strategy combining trade, diplomacy, and force.
