In 757, Sijilmasa was founded in the Tafilalt oasis on the northern edge of the Sahara. Its location made it a key stopping point where desert caravans could rest, buy supplies, and connect Mediterranean markets with West African goods. This city would become a major northern gateway for early trans-Saharan trade routes.
From about the 8th century onward, regular caravans increasingly followed established routes across the Sahara. Gold from the western Sudan and salt from the desert were among the most important commodities, and the trade supported new cities and political power along the routes. Berber-speaking groups were central as guides, transporters, and brokers across the desert.
By 889–890, Arabic geographers described Awdaghust (Aoudaghost) as a major town south of Sijilmasa, controlled by Saharan Sanhaja groups. It served as a southern edge market where caravans moving across the desert met West African traders. This shows that long-distance trade relied on linked oasis towns and local rulers, not just one empire.
In North Africa, Zenata confederation groups (including the Maghrawa) competed for control of key towns and corridors feeding the trans-Saharan routes. Control of a town like Sijilmasa mattered because it could tax caravans, protect merchants, and channel trade through allied markets. This competition set the stage for later conflict with Sanhaja/Lamtuna networks further south.
Around 1035, the Gudala leader Yahya ibn Ibrahim returned from pilgrimage and sought religious instruction for his people, helping bring the scholar Abdallah ibn Yasin into the desert communities. What began as a reform effort soon became tied to political and military organization among Sanhaja groups. This development mattered for trade because it created a new coalition capable of enforcing control over caravan routes.
After 1054, leadership of the movement shifted toward Lamtuna chiefs within the wider Sanhaja confederation. Under Lamtuna commanders, the movement moved from moral reform into military campaigns that targeted strategic trade nodes. This shift connected political power directly to the wealth and logistics of trans-Saharan commerce.
In 1055, Almoravid forces led by Abdallah ibn Yasin took Sijilmasa from the Maghrawa and killed the local ruler. Taking Sijilmasa gave the Lamtuna-led Almoravid coalition a strong position at the northern end of western trans-Saharan routes. The city’s role as a trading hub—and later as a minting center—linked political control to money, taxation, and long-distance exchange.
Around 1054–1055, Almoravid expansion also reached the southern edge of the desert, capturing Awdaghust. This threatened existing arrangements between Saharan intermediaries and West African powers and signaled that the new coalition aimed to regulate the full route, not just the northern gateway. Control of both ends of a corridor could redirect caravans and reshape who profited from trade.
In 1056, Yahya ibn Umar al-Lamtuni, an early Almoravid emir and key Lamtuna leader, was killed in conflict in the Sahara region. His death shows how fragile desert coalitions could be, even as they expanded. Leadership then passed within the Lamtuna elite, keeping trade-route strategy central to Almoravid power.
In 1067–1068, the Andalusi geographer al-Bakri wrote the Book of Roads and Kingdoms based on earlier texts and merchant reports. His work is a major source on Saharan routes, trade towns, and West African states, describing how the caravan economy worked in practice. It also helps historians link places like Sijilmasa and southern markets into a connected trade system.
In 1324, Mansa Musa of Mali traveled on pilgrimage to Mecca, passing through Cairo with a large amount of gold. The journey drew wide attention to West Africa’s gold supply and to Mali’s role in trans-Saharan exchange networks. It also illustrates how trade wealth connected West African states to the wider Islamic world through travel, diplomacy, and learning.
On February 13, 1352, Ibn Battuta set out from Sijilmasa with a caravan that included merchants, then reached the Taghaza salt mines after about 25 days. His account describes salt extraction, enslaved labor under the Massufa, and how salt functioned as a high-value trade good in Mali—sometimes even used like money. This is a clear snapshot of how Berber-linked desert labor, caravan organization, and West African demand were tied together in the 14th century trade system.
In 1393, Sijilmasa was abandoned, ending its long role as a principal northern terminus for western trans-Saharan caravans. With a key oasis city gone, trade patterns and political control had to adjust, often shifting toward other routes and centers. This closure marks a clear endpoint for the era when Sijilmasa anchored the Lamtuna–Zenata struggle over the western Saharan corridor.
