Mansa Musa’s famous pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) drew wide attention to Mali’s wealth and to the trade routes linking West Africa with North Africa and the wider Islamic world. In later accounts, his journey is closely associated with increased patronage for mosques, scholars, and book culture in Mali’s major towns.
By the early 1300s, the Mali Empire extended its authority to Timbuktu, helping tie the Niger River towns into trans-Saharan caravan trade. This created political conditions for regular movement of goods, people, and Islamic learning between the Sahel and North Africa, including Morocco.
The Djinguereber Mosque was completed in the 1320s and became one of Timbuktu’s major institutions for worship and learning. Large mosques like this also served as teaching spaces and public meeting places, reinforcing Timbuktu’s role as both a trading city and a scholarly center in long-distance networks.
Sankoré, founded in the 1300s and later expanded, developed into a well-known madrasa (an Islamic school). Rather than a single modern-style university, Timbuktu’s learning worked through many teachers and study circles, supported by libraries and manuscript copying that linked the city to places like Fez.
The traveler Ibn Battuta visited the Mali Empire in the 1350s and described its cities and customs for audiences across the Islamic world. Such travel writing helped spread practical knowledge about routes, rulers, and markets, supporting the reputation of Sahelian towns in scholarly and commercial circles.
In 1468, Sonni Ali captured Timbuktu, bringing it under the growing Songhai Empire. Control of Timbuktu mattered because it sat at the meeting point of caravan routes and river transport, making it valuable for taxing trade and influencing religious and scholarly life.
Songhai’s takeover of Djenné (often dated to the 1470s) strengthened its grip on the Inland Niger Delta’s trade and transport. With Djenné linked to river traffic and regional markets, and Timbuktu linked to desert caravans, the two cities formed a connected commercial and scholarly corridor.
In 1493, Askia Muhammad (Askia the Great) seized power in Songhai, beginning the Askia dynasty. His rule is known for closer alignment with Islamic scholarship and law, which supported Timbuktu’s teachers and judges and helped connect Songhai’s cities more tightly to North African intellectual networks.
In 1526, Leo Africanus finished a major geographic work describing regions of Africa known through travel and scholarly reports, including information about West African kingdoms and trade. Though written for readers far from the Sahel, it shows how knowledge about Timbuktu and its trade could circulate through Mediterranean centers such as Fez and beyond.
In 1549, the Saadian ruler Muhammad al-Shaykh captured Fez, and by 1554 the Saadians ended Wattasid rule there. Stronger central power in Morocco mattered for trans-Saharan routes because Moroccan states could more effectively direct taxation, diplomacy, and later military actions that affected caravan trade to and from the Niger bend.
On 1591-03-13, Moroccan forces defeated Songhai at the Battle of Tondibi using gunpowder weapons, a turning point in regional politics. The defeat weakened Songhai’s ability to secure trade corridors, which made caravan routes and city governance more unstable across the Niger bend.
Moroccan troops captured Timbuktu in 1591 and created the Pashalik of Timbuktu, governed by officials tied to Morocco. This shifted the balance of power between local elites and outside rulers, and it helped set conditions for the later arrests and exile of leading scholars.
After Morocco’s conquest, several Timbuktu scholars were arrested; the prominent jurist and writer Ahmad Baba was deported to Morocco in the 1590s. His removal symbolized how political conquest could disrupt scholarly networks, even as texts and teachers continued to circulate between the Sahel and cities like Fez.
In 1599, Moroccan forces defeated an effort by the Mali Empire to take Djenné, consolidating Moroccan influence in key river-and-caravan markets. With Timbuktu and Djenné under pressure from outside rule and conflict, the region’s commercial and scholarly life became harder to sustain at its earlier scale.
Around 1655, al-Sa‘di of Timbuktu wrote the Tarikh al-Sudan, a key Arabic chronicle of the region’s rulers, scholars, and cities. The work captures how trade, learning, and politics were intertwined—and how the Moroccan conquest and its aftermath reshaped the older Jenne–Timbuktu–Fez connections.
