Sijilmasa was founded in the Tafilalt oasis on the northern edge of the Sahara, positioned to link Maghrib markets with caravan routes heading toward the Niger River region. Its location made it a natural collection and redistribution point for desert trade, supported by oasis agriculture and water management.
Medieval accounts describe Sufri Kharijites (an early Islamic movement) among the groups who organized the new town’s political life. A remembered early ruler, ʿIsa ibn Mazyad al-Aswad, illustrates that Sijilmasa quickly developed leadership structures to manage a growing, mixed community in a frontier trade zone.
The Midrarid (Banu Midrar) dynasty is associated with Sijilmasa’s early medieval principality, giving the town a stable political base. This stability mattered for commerce because long-distance caravans depended on predictable tolls, security, and storage at desert-edge hubs.
By the early medieval period, Sijilmasa was widely recognized as the northern terminus of a major trans-Saharan route connecting the Maghrib to West Africa. This role made the city an entrepôt (a trading and storage center) for high-value goods such as gold and other caravan commodities moving between regions.
During the rise of the Fatimids, ʿUbayd Allāh al-Mahdī (later the first Fatimid caliph) was captured and jailed by the Kharijite emir of Sijilmasa. The episode shows Sijilmasa’s political importance: controlling the city meant influence over people and information moving along major trade corridors.
Kutama forces allied to the Fatimid movement marched to Sijilmasa and secured al-Mahdī’s release in late August 909. The takeover and plundering reported in sources underline how desert-edge trade cities could be pulled into wider struggles for legitimacy and empire-building.
In the late 10th century, Maghrawa (Zenata) forces conquered Sijilmasa, ending Midrarid rule. The change demonstrates a repeating pattern in Sijilmasa’s history: control of the city was contested because it sat at a strategic choke point between Saharan caravan traffic and northern markets.
The Almoravids took control of Sijilmasa in the mid-11th century, using it to strengthen their hold over trans-Saharan commerce. Britannica links Almoravid consolidation over Sijilmasa with their broader expansion in Morocco, showing how trade hubs could support state formation and military campaigns.
Under Almoravid rule, Sijilmasa functioned as a key mint, connecting Saharan gold flows to coinage used across North Africa and beyond. Minting mattered economically and politically: it helped standardize exchange and signaled who controlled the main gateways of the gold trade.
As Almoravid power collapsed, the Almohads captured Sijilmasa, bringing the city into a new imperial system. Control of Sijilmasa helped the Almohads tap caravan wealth, but repeated conquest also disrupted local governance and the stability that merchants depended on.
The Marinids expanded across Morocco and captured Sijilmasa, reflecting continued competition to control Saharan trade gateways. By this period, political power in Morocco was shifting northward, and long-distance commerce faced growing pressures from insecurity and changing trade patterns.
In 1352, the traveler Ibn Battuta left from Sijilmasa with a caravan heading south, describing the route via places such as Taghaza and the scale of the salt-and-gold trade. His account shows that Sijilmasa still functioned as a major staging point for trans-Saharan journeys in the mid-14th century.
By the later 14th century, Sijilmasa’s long dominance as a trans-Saharan entrepôt had collapsed under political conflict and economic strain. Reference works summarize the city’s destruction and disappearance as a functioning medieval center, marking a clear end to its peak-era role in Saharan commerce.
