Sunni Ali became ruler at Gao and began expanding Songhai’s reach along the Niger River. Control of river ports and caravan “gateways” mattered because it let the state tax goods moving between West Africa and North Africa. This marked the start of Songhai’s rise as a major power in trans-Saharan commerce.
Songhai seized Timbuktu, an important meeting point for Saharan caravans and Niger River trade. Holding the city helped Songhai supervise merchants and channel taxes from high-value goods like gold and salt. It also brought Songhai into closer contact with Muslim scholars and commercial networks tied to North Africa.
After a long siege, Sunni Ali captured Djenné, another major trading center connected to trans-Saharan routes. With both Timbuktu and Djenné under Songhai influence, the state could better police the movement of caravans and river traffic. This strengthened Songhai’s ability to extract revenue from long-distance commerce.
After Sunni Ali’s death, Askia Muhammad (often called Askia the Great) took power and built a more formal style of government. A stronger central administration helped the state enforce rules on merchants and improve the reliability of tax collection. This political shift set up the trade regulation reforms that followed.
Askia Muhammad increased oversight of trade by introducing standardized weights and measures and placing trade inspectors in major market centers. These steps made transactions easier to verify and helped officials assess taxes and duties more consistently. The reforms aimed to turn commercial growth into dependable state revenue.
Songhai’s economy combined Niger floodplain agriculture with taxes on long-distance trade, especially gold and salt. Because caravans carried high-value goods over long distances, even small taxes could bring large returns to the state. This fiscal base helped fund armies and administrators who, in turn, protected the trade routes.
Late in Askia Muhammad’s rule, internal power struggles led to his removal from the throne. Leadership instability made it harder to keep provincial officials loyal and to enforce consistent policies on taxation and commerce. These tensions became an important background factor for later weakening of Songhai’s control over trade corridors.
Askia Dawud ruled for decades, a period often described as comparatively stable and prosperous. Stability mattered for trade because merchants depended on predictable security and rules along routes linking the Niger cities to the Sahara. A calmer political environment also supported regular tax collection from markets and caravans.
As Morocco’s Saadi rulers strengthened their state, they looked south toward Saharan trade routes and salt production areas that affected regional wealth. Control of routes into Morocco could determine who profited from caravan commerce and who could claim tribute. This rising pressure foreshadowed direct military intervention.
After Askia Dawud’s death, disputes among elite factions and royal relatives led to rapid turnovers at the top. When rulers change quickly, provincial commanders and tax officials are more likely to act independently or resist orders. This instability reduced Songhai’s ability to coordinate defense and manage commerce consistently.
Morocco’s Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur sent an army from Marrakesh toward Songhai, beginning a major campaign. The crossing itself showed how much strategic value Morocco placed on controlling Saharan routes and the flow of wealth. The invasion targeted the political system that had supported Songhai’s taxation of trans-Saharan commerce.
Moroccan forces defeated the Songhai army at Tondibi, a decisive battle that undermined Songhai’s ability to defend its commercial centers. With the central army weakened, the state could no longer reliably enforce taxation and control over key routes. This marked the turning point from imperial dominance to fragmentation.
After the Songhai defeat, Moroccan-backed forces captured Timbuktu and installed a new governing structure tied to Moroccan authority. Control over the city mattered because Timbuktu was a major node where caravan trade could be supervised and taxed. The takeover disrupted existing Songhai systems of regulation and helped redirect power over trans-Saharan commerce.
By 1591, the Songhai Empire could no longer function as a single authority controlling trans-Saharan commerce through policy, taxation, and enforcement. Moroccan occupation and ongoing conflict contributed to political fragmentation, weakening the older system that had linked Niger cities to Saharan routes under one state. The result was an altered balance of power in West African trade, with Songhai’s imperial-era trade controls effectively ended.
