VOC chartered by the Dutch States General
Labels: VOC, Dutch StatesThe Dutch Republic merged competing trading ventures into the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), a chartered company meant to strengthen Dutch trade and power in Asia. The charter granted the company a monopoly over Dutch trade in much of the Indian Ocean world and gave it quasi-state powers, such as making treaties and waging war. This created the institutional base for VOC rule in the East Indies.
