On 23 June 1757, the East India Company defeated the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey. This victory helped the Company gain decisive political influence in Bengal, laying groundwork for later revenue and export-oriented commodity systems, including indigo.
On 16 August 1765, the Treaty of Allahabad granted the Company Diwani rights—the right to collect land revenue—in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. These revenues helped finance the purchase and export of Indian goods, strengthening a system where agricultural production served imperial trade needs.
In 1769–1770, a major famine struck Bengal and Bihar, causing severe population loss and economic disruption. The crisis occurred during early Company revenue administration and highlighted how revenue demands and agricultural vulnerability could combine to produce devastating outcomes.
In 1772, two West Indian planters opened an indigo factory near Chandannagar, introducing a plantation-style processing approach that differed from older local methods. This helped scale indigo for export markets by linking cultivation to factory processing and overseas demand.
By 1783, Bengal’s indigo exports were recorded at about 1,200 maunds, showing an early but growing export trade. Over the following decades, colonial and commercial pressures pushed indigo from a minor commodity toward a major export tied to global dye markets.
In 1793, the Company finalized the Permanent Settlement in Bengal, fixing land revenue demands and collecting them through zamindars (landholders treated as proprietors for revenue purposes). This restructured incentives in the countryside and shaped the power relations that indigo planters later used when contracting with cultivators (ryots).
By 1800, Bengal’s indigo exports rose to about 39,000 maunds, far above the levels recorded in the 1780s. Rising exports reflected tighter integration of Bengal agriculture into global markets, with cultivation increasingly organized to meet overseas dye demand.
In 1815–1816, Bengal supplied about 128,000 maunds of indigo, indicating a major surge in production. Scaling up exports required more contracted cultivation and strengthened planter control through advances, contracts, and factory-centered processing.
By 1830, parliamentary debates recorded large indigo exports by private traders alongside Company exports, showing the industry’s deep commercialization. This mattered because profit-driven competition encouraged planters and agents to push for more reliable and cheaper indigo supply from cultivators.
By 1831, Bengal had roughly 830 indigo concerns working with about 518,000 bighas of land, showing how widely the crop had spread. This scale tied large rural areas to export production and increased the number of cultivators exposed to contract-based and debt-linked cultivation systems.
In March 1859, cultivators in Bengal’s Nadia district launched a strike-like refusal to grow indigo, protesting coercion, unfair prices, and debt tied to advance payments. The movement spread across indigo districts and drew support from parts of the Bengali public, turning a commodity system into a broader political and social issue.
In 1860, Dinabandhu Mitra’s play Nil Darpan (“The Indigo Mirror”) was published and helped publicize abuses associated with indigo planting. Cultural and press attention mattered because it widened the audience for peasant grievances and increased pressure on colonial authorities to respond.
In March 1860, Bengal’s government passed an Indigo Act that enforced contracts for one season while creating an Indigo Commission to investigate the system. The Commission’s August 1860 report was highly critical of planter practices and affirmed that cultivators could not be forced to grow indigo, marking an official break from coercive enforcement.
After 1859–1860, indigo production in Bengal declined sharply as coercive arrangements faced resistance and official scrutiny. This shift did not end colonial commodity pressures overall, but it did close a key chapter in Bengal where export demand had driven indigo cultivation through planter-controlled contracting.
