Ribeira Palace complex grows as port-administration center
Labels: Ribeira Palace, Casa daBeginning in 1498 and expanding in the early 1500s, the Ribeira Palace (Paço da Ribeira) was built along the Tagus waterfront beside shipyards and trading houses. Over time, key imperial administration—including the Casa da Índia—was located in this riverside complex. Concentrating government offices near the docks made it faster to manage arrivals, storage, payments, and paperwork linked to overseas fleets.
