The Navigation Act of 1660 strengthened England’s mercantilist (empire-first) trade rules by restricting who could carry goods to and from English colonies. These rules encouraged intra-imperial routes and helped push Caribbean provisioning and produce into regulated shipping circuits linked to English ports.
In the Treaty of Madrid, Spain recognized England’s possession of Jamaica, formalizing the island’s place in England’s Caribbean system. This made long-term investment in plantations, ports, and inter-island trade more secure, and it tied provisioning routes more firmly to an English imperial framework.
The Royal African Company received its charter in 1672, supporting large-scale trafficking of enslaved Africans to English colonies, especially in the West Indies. As plantation output grew, so did inter-island movement of supplies (food, draft animals, building materials) to keep sugar economies operating.

War between Great Britain and Spain began in October 1739, with much of the conflict focused on shipping, privateering, and control of Caribbean sea lanes. Wartime risk changed provisioning patterns by increasing convoying, raising freight and insurance costs, and making secure inter-island links more valuable.
The Sugar Act of 1764 revived and tightened earlier molasses duties and expanded customs enforcement. By targeting clandestine trade with non-British islands, it tried to steer more commerce into British-controlled networks, affecting where Caribbean goods could be bought, sold, and legally shipped.
The Treaty of Paris (1783) recognized the United States as independent, ending the war but breaking the old colonial trade relationship. British Caribbean plantations still depended heavily on imported food and lumber, so merchants and officials had to renegotiate how (and whether) supplies could enter the islands under British rules.
A massive uprising in Saint-Domingue began in 1791 and developed into the Haitian Revolution, ending in independence in 1804. The conflict disrupted one of the world’s major sugar and coffee producers, shifting markets and altering how British Caribbean colonies positioned their own production and shipping connections.
The Slave Trade Act received Royal Assent on 25 March 1807 and took effect on 1 May 1807, outlawing the British slave trade (though not slavery itself). Over time, limiting new forced-labor imports changed plantation investment decisions and increased pressure on provisioning systems that supported enslaved workforces.
The Customs Law Repeal Act of 1825 repealed and reorganized many older customs laws, part of a broader shift toward revising long-standing trade regulations. For Caribbean shipping, this legal restructuring mattered because it affected how goods were classified, taxed, and cleared—practical details that shaped provisioning costs and routes.
The Slavery Abolition Act received Royal Assent in 1833 and took effect on 1 August 1834, ending slavery in most British colonies but replacing it with a transitional “apprenticeship” labor system for many people. This was a turning point for plantation economies and the shipping networks that served them, because labor relations, credit, and supply needs began to change under a new legal order.
