First Spanish asiento license for slave imports
Labels: Asiento, Laurent deIn August 1518, the Spanish Crown issued the first major asiento (a contract license) for importing enslaved Africans into Spain’s American colonies, granting Laurent de Gouvenot (also known as Laurent de Gorrevod) an eight-year monopoly. This helped formalize a regulated supply system because Spain lacked direct access to West African slave-trading networks. The asiento system became a key administrative tool tying imperial revenue to forced labor in the Americas.
