After the return route was proven, Spain developed a system of large, armed merchant ships traveling between Manila and Acapulco. These voyages carried Asian goods (like silks and porcelain) eastward and carried American silver westward to purchase more Asian products. Over time, the route became a stable, state-regulated trade link that tied the Philippines closely to New Spain (colonial Mexico).
In 1565, navigator Andrés de Urdaneta sailed from the Philippines to Mexico using a northern route that caught favorable winds and currents (often called the tornaviaje, or return voyage). Reaching Acapulco in October 1565 proved that regular two-way travel across the Pacific was possible. This breakthrough made sustained transoceanic trade between Manila and Acapulco practical.
In 1571, Spanish governor Miguel López de Legazpi established Manila as the capital of the Spanish colony in the Philippines. The city’s protected harbor and position in Asian trade networks made it a natural center for long-distance commerce. This created the Pacific endpoint that the Acapulco–Manila galleon route would rely on.
In November 1587, English privateer Thomas Cavendish captured the Spanish galleon Santa Ana near the Baja California region while it was on the Manila–Acapulco route. The attack highlighted how valuable (and vulnerable) the Pacific trade ships were. It also reinforced the need for heavier defenses, escorts, and strict sailing procedures for later voyages.
In 1596, the Spanish galleon San Felipe sailing from Manila to Acapulco was driven by typhoons and wrecked on the Japanese coast. The incident escalated into conflict involving Spanish traders and missionaries and Japanese authorities. It showed how weather and unexpected landfalls could turn a commercial voyage into a major political problem.
As the galleons began arriving regularly, Acapulco hosted major trade fairs timed to the ships’ schedules. Merchants gathered to buy and redistribute Asian imports into New Spain and, through other routes, toward Europe. These fairs turned a small Pacific port into a seasonal hub where prices, credit, and transport networks reshaped regional trade.
By the early 1600s, the wealth moving through Acapulco made the port a target for raiders. In 1616, authorities built (and later rebuilt) the Fort of San Diego to strengthen Acapulco’s defenses. Protecting the port helped keep the galleon system functioning by securing its main American terminal.
In December 1709, a British privateering expedition led by Woodes Rogers captured the Manila galleon Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y Desengaño. The loss demonstrated continuing threats along the route even after a century of experience. It also underlined how a single captured ship could mean major financial losses because cargo and silver were concentrated in a few annual sailings.
On June 20, 1743, British commodore George Anson captured the Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de Covadonga while searching for Manila-route prizes. The capture brought in an enormous haul of silver and trade goods, showing again how profitable the route could be for attackers. Events like this pushed Spain to rethink defenses and administrative controls in the Pacific.
From late September to early October 1762, British forces attacked and captured Manila, leading to an occupation lasting into 1764. Although the occupation did not permanently remove Spain, it exposed weaknesses in colonial defense and administration. The shock contributed to later reforms aimed at tightening control and improving revenue in Spain’s overseas territories.
In 1785, Spain established the Real Compañía de Filipinas (Royal Company of the Philippines) as a chartered company to expand and organize trade tied to the Philippines. The company reflected growing efforts to diversify commerce beyond the traditional galleon system. It signaled that Spanish policy makers were seeking new ways to manage Asian trade as older arrangements faced strain.
Starting in 1810, the Mexican War of Independence brought instability to key routes and ports that supported the galleon trade, including Acapulco. Conflict made shipping schedules, security, and financing harder to maintain. These disruptions helped push a long-running trade system toward collapse at the start of the 1800s.
In 1815, the final Manila galleon reached Acapulco, marking the end of the regular Acapulco–Manila trade system. The route’s shutdown reflected political changes in Mexico and shifting imperial priorities that made the old system difficult to sustain. Its end closed a 250-year Pacific bridge that had moved American silver to Asia and Asian goods to the Americas.
