Portugal built Elmina Castle (Castelo de São Jorge da Mina) in 1482 to protect and control trade along the Gulf of Guinea. Although first focused on gold, the fort later became a major holding and shipping point in the Atlantic slave trade. This marks an early stage when European coastal forts helped connect inland captives to Atlantic shipping routes.
By the 1520s, a transatlantic slave trade to the Caribbean had begun on a small scale as European colonies demanded labor. Iberian empires often relied on Portuguese suppliers connected to West African coastal networks. This new demand increased pressure on West African societies and intensified raiding, warfare, and captive trading linked to Atlantic markets.
In 1526, King Afonso I of Kongo wrote to Portugal’s King João III warning that slave trading was emptying his kingdom of people. His complaint shows a key demographic mechanism of the trade: sustained external demand could pull captives out of societies faster than communities could recover. It also shows that African rulers’ responses varied, including attempts to limit exports and curb illegal seizures.
From the 1570s onward, Portugal’s American colony of Brazil became a major destination for enslaved Africans, especially for sugar production. This helped drive a long-term rise in Atlantic shipping out of West and West-Central Africa. Over time, repeated removals—often concentrated among young adults—reshaped local age structures and family formation patterns.
By the mid-1620s, the Dutch West India Company entered the Atlantic slave trade, and overall imports into the Americas had already reached large totals. Britannica estimates that by this point about 400,000 enslaved people had been imported into the Americas and annual imports were rising toward about 10,000 per year. Expanding competition among European powers reinforced coastal trading systems and increased the scale of extraction from African regions tied to the trade.
In 1713, the Asiento de negros agreement granted Britain a contract to supply enslaved Africans to Spanish colonies, tied to the Peace of Utrecht. This formalized and expanded British participation in the trade, adding predictable demand through licensed deliveries. For West Africa, such state-backed contracts helped stabilize and intensify outward flows from coastal markets and their inland supply zones.
By combining shipping records and estimates for missing voyages, modern research estimates that about 12.52 million captives departed Africa for the Americas and about 10.7 million disembarked alive. These totals point to a demographic shock that included deaths during capture, marches to the coast, and the Middle Passage, plus long-term population loss through forced migration. The burden was not evenly shared: some coastal regions and interior corridors experienced repeated drains on working-age people.
On 25 March 1807, the UK Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act, banning the slave trade in the British Empire (effective 1 May 1807). While this did not end slavery itself, it was a major policy turning point that began shifting the trade’s geography and legality. For West Africa, British abolition changed incentives: some routes moved further into illegality, while coastal enforcement and diplomacy became more significant factors in who could trade and where.
In 1808, Britain formed the West Africa Squadron (also called the Preventive Squadron) to suppress the slave trade by patrolling the West African coast. This enforcement effort interacted with local politics: some traders adapted by using different flags, ports, and smuggling tactics, while violence and instability could persist in areas where capture and resale remained profitable. The squadron’s long operation also produced records that later helped historians quantify patterns of the trade.
The United States prohibited the importation of enslaved people under a law signed on 2 March 1807 and effective 1 January 1808 (the earliest date allowed by the Constitution). This did not end slavery inside the U.S., but it changed international demand and encouraged illegal trafficking. For West Africa, such bans could redirect shipments toward other markets (especially Brazil and Cuba) and increase incentives for covert departures from less monitored stretches of coastline.
Brazil’s parliament enacted the Queirós Law (Eusébio de Queirós Law) in 1850 to make the Atlantic slave trade illegal and enable stronger repression of trafficking. Because Brazil had been a major destination, this policy shift reduced one of the largest remaining legal markets for West African captives. In demographic terms, restricting the main destination market helped slow the outward drain, though illegal trading did not disappear immediately.
By the later 1800s, Atlantic slaving voyages had largely been suppressed, but their demographic effects in West Africa persisted in population levels, household structure, and regional imbalances created over centuries. Modern scholarship uses historical shipping records to estimate exports by region and century and connects heavier export exposure to long-run social and economic outcomes. The end state by 1900 is therefore not just “trade stopped,” but a West Africa still shaped by the population losses and disruptions of 1500–1900.
