England’s Court of King’s Bench ruled that James Somerset could not be forcibly removed from England to be sold abroad. The decision was narrow, but many people understood it as a sign that slavery lacked clear legal support in England. Abolitionists later used its moral and legal impact to build momentum against the slave trade.
On the British slave ship Zong, crew members began throwing enslaved Africans overboard, later claiming it was necessary due to shortages and seeking insurance payment for the “lost cargo.” News of the killings spread through court disputes and public discussion. The event became a powerful example for abolitionists of how the trade treated human lives as property.
Josiah Wedgwood produced and distributed an antislavery medallion showing an enslaved man in chains with the words “Am I not a man and a brother?” The image became a widely recognized symbol used in fundraising and public persuasion. It shows how the movement used consumer goods and visual culture to expand support beyond Parliament.
A small London-based group—later widely known as the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade—organized to pursue a focused goal: ending Britain’s participation in the Atlantic slave trade. It combined Quaker activists with Anglican allies to strengthen influence in Parliament. This helped turn moral opposition into a sustained national campaign.
Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act 1788 (Dolben’s Act), the first British law to regulate conditions on slave ships by limiting how many captives could be carried relative to ship size. While it did not end the trade, it reflected rising public concern and gave abolitionists evidence that the trade involved extreme overcrowding and high death rates. The act also showed that Parliament could be pressured to intervene in slave-trading business practices.
William Wilberforce delivered an early major speech in the House of Commons arguing that the slave trade was morally wrong and should be ended. His work connected grassroots campaigning (petitions, public meetings, pamphlets) with parliamentary strategy. Over time, repeated debates kept the issue on the national agenda even when bills failed.
Abolitionists helped form the Sierra Leone Company, linking antislavery goals with a plan to build a settlement in West Africa for formerly enslaved and free Black people. The effort reflected one abolitionist strategy: demonstrating an alternative to slave-based trade and creating a base for lawful commerce. The project also showed the movement’s growing organizational capacity and international focus.
More than a thousand Black settlers from Nova Scotia helped establish Freetown in Sierra Leone. The settlement became closely tied to British antislavery activity and later to British policy in West Africa. It also highlighted the complicated human consequences of war, slavery, and displacement across the Atlantic world.
The Acts of Union created the United Kingdom and brought Irish MPs into the Parliament at Westminster. Many abolition campaigners viewed the new political arithmetic as helpful for building a stronger majority for abolition. This change mattered because abolition depended on votes, party strategy, and the balance of power in Parliament.
Parliament passed a law in 1806 aimed at preventing British subjects from importing enslaved people into foreign colonies and limiting related support from British ports. This was a key step toward full abolition, cutting back parts of the trade even before the main ban. It signaled that the government was moving from regulation toward prohibition.
After years of debate and organizing, the House of Commons supported the bill to abolish Britain’s Atlantic slave trade by a large margin (283 to 16) during its second reading. The vote showed that public campaigning, petitioning, and parliamentary leadership had shifted political opinion. It also set up the bill’s final passage into law.
The Slave Trade Act became law when it received royal assent, formally prohibiting the British Atlantic slave trade across the British Empire. The act did not emancipate enslaved people already held in British colonies, but it made participation in the trade illegal. This was the central legislative outcome of the 1787–1807 British abolition campaign focused on the trade itself.
The act’s ban on the slave trade began to operate in practice from its commencement date. Enforcement was uneven at first, and illegal trading continued, but the legal change altered British policy and made suppression an official state goal. From this point, abolitionists increasingly pushed for stronger enforcement and, later, for emancipation itself.
