In April 1500, a Portuguese fleet led by Pedro Álvares Cabral reached the coast of what became Brazil and claimed it for Portugal. This opened a long colonial relationship that later tied Brazil’s economy to Atlantic trade. Over time, Portuguese settlers would build plantation production aimed at export markets, which increased demand for forced labor.
During the 1530s, Portuguese settlement expanded and sugar production took off in northeastern Brazil, especially Pernambuco. Sugar required large investments and intensive labor, and it quickly became a major export. As Indigenous labor systems collapsed under violence and disease and proved difficult to control, plantation owners increasingly turned to enslaved Africans.
By the mid-1500s, Portuguese merchants were shipping enslaved Africans across the Atlantic to supply labor in Brazil. These voyages linked Brazilian plantations to African ports and to European trade finance and shipping. Over the following centuries, Brazil would become the largest destination for enslaved Africans in the Americas.
In 1580, Portugal and Spain came under the same monarch in the Iberian Union. This made Portuguese territories, including Brazil and Angola, targets in wars involving Spain’s enemies such as the Dutch. Those conflicts later disrupted sugar production and pushed Atlantic slave-trading competition to intensify.
In the early 1600s, Palmares (a large quilombo, or community of escaped enslaved people) formed in northeastern Brazil and expanded over time. Palmares showed how slavery produced long-running resistance and alternative communities outside plantation control. The repeated campaigns against Palmares also show how colonial authorities relied on force to protect the slave-based economy.
In 1630, Dutch forces captured key areas around Olinda and Recife in Pernambuco, the center of Brazil’s sugar production. The Dutch occupation increased the pressure to secure a steady supply of enslaved labor for plantations. It also pushed the struggle for control of Atlantic trade routes, including routes linking Brazil to West Central Africa.
In 1641, Dutch forces seized Luanda in Angola, a major port in the West Central African slave trade that supplied Brazil. Control of Luanda mattered because Brazil’s plantation economy depended on regular arrivals of enslaved Africans. The episode shows how warfare and colonial rivalry could directly affect the forced-labor pipeline across the Atlantic.
From the late 1600s into the 1700s, gold mining expanded in Brazil (especially in Minas Gerais), adding a new major sector to the colony’s economy. Mining required large numbers of workers and intensified the importation of enslaved Africans. This shift shows how the slave trade served multiple export-driven industries, not only sugar.
In January 1694, Portuguese-led forces captured Palmares’s main settlement after long campaigns. Zumbi, a key resistance leader, was captured and killed in November 1695. The fall of Palmares reduced large-scale maroon resistance in that region, but quilombos continued elsewhere and remained a lasting symbol of resistance to slavery.
Across the full era of the transatlantic slave trade, Portuguese ships carried more enslaved Africans than any other European power. A large share of those people were taken to Portuguese Brazil—on the order of millions—making Brazil the single largest destination in the Americas. These totals reflect centuries of shipping, finance, and plantation demand tightly linking Brazil to African ports.
In 1826, Brazil (newly independent) signed a treaty with Britain agreeing to end the transatlantic slave trade. British pressure grew because Britain had abolished its own slave trade earlier and was expanding anti-slave-trade patrols. The treaty signaled a major policy turning point, but enforcement in Brazil remained weak at first.
On November 7, 1831, Brazil enacted a law (often called the Lei Feijó) that prohibited the importation of enslaved Africans and declared those brought in after that date free. In practice, trafficking continued and many people were illegally enslaved after arrival. The gap between the law and enforcement became a defining feature of the late slave trade to Brazil.
On September 4, 1850, Brazil passed the Eusébio de Queirós Law, strengthening earlier bans and creating stronger enforcement against trafficking. British naval pressure and ship seizures helped drive Brazil toward stricter action. After 1850, the transatlantic slave trade to Brazil rapidly declined, marking a clear end point for this trade system even though slavery inside Brazil continued until 1888.
