Royal charter creates the Royal African Company
Labels: Royal African, Royal charter, English CrownIn 1672, the English Crown issued a new charter reorganizing earlier English Africa-trade efforts into the Royal African Company (RAC). The charter granted the company a monopoly over English trade along much of the West African coast, tying state power to private commerce. This created a centralized system of forts, ships, and finance that would support large-scale slave voyages within the wider triangular trade.
