On 1979-01-31, the Shekou Industrial Zone was officially established under China Merchants Group and Yuan Geng. It became an early testing ground for market-oriented policies—especially port-led industrial development—before Shenzhen’s larger Special Economic Zone framework was finalized.
On 1980-08-26, China approved regulations to create Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Guangdong, including Shenzhen. SEZ status mattered because it enabled experiments with foreign investment, trade facilitation, and more flexible local economic policies, helping connect Shenzhen to global production networks.
In 1983, Shenzhen erected checkpoints and barriers to separate the core SEZ area from the rest of mainland China, sometimes described as a “second line border.” This reinforced Shenzhen’s role as a controlled policy experiment and helped concentrate investment and manufacturing in the zone’s early core districts.
In 1987, Huawei was established in Shenzhen, initially focusing on telecommunications equipment. The company’s growth signaled how Shenzhen’s policy environment and supplier base could support technology firms that linked domestic capabilities to global electronics markets.
In 1988, Foxconn opened its first manufacturing plant in mainland China in Longhua, Shenzhen. This strengthened Shenzhen’s role in contract manufacturing—where a company assembles products for other brands—and helped draw more component suppliers, logistics services, and skilled production management into the region.
In 1988, Shenzhen Electronics Group (SEG) established a market for selling domestic and overseas electronic components in its building, helping Huaqiangbei develop into a major electronics trading area. This mattered because fast, local access to parts and vendors supported rapid prototyping, repair, and small-batch production that fed into larger export-oriented manufacturing.
On 1990-12-01, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange was formally founded. A local stock market helped channel capital into fast-growing companies and made Shenzhen more attractive for corporate expansion tied to export manufacturing and technology development.
From 1992-01-18 to 1992-02-21, Deng Xiaoping toured southern China, including Shenzhen, to push reforms after political and economic uncertainty. His remarks strengthened support for market-oriented experimentation, helping Shenzhen attract more investment and deepen its ties to global electronics supply chains.
Construction of SEG Plaza began in 1997 and the building was completed in 2000 at the center of Huaqiangbei. Concentrating offices and electronics retail in a landmark tower helped reinforce the district’s identity as a dense sourcing marketplace, where buyers could compare parts, negotiate quickly, and coordinate repairs and production.
On 2001-12-11, China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO). WTO accession accelerated trade integration and export growth, which increased demand for electronics manufacturing and component sourcing—conditions that favored hubs like Shenzhen with established factories, suppliers, and trading markets.
In 2010, the Longhua Science and Technology Park (often called “Foxconn City”) gained international attention after a cluster of employee suicide attempts. The episode highlighted the human costs that could accompany high-speed, high-volume electronics production, and it increased pressure on manufacturers and global brands to review labor conditions and oversight in complex supply chains.
Starting on 2010-07-01, Bao’an and Longgang districts were incorporated into the Shenzhen SEZ, extending SEZ policies citywide. This expansion provided more land and policy coverage for factories, housing, and logistics, supporting continued scale-up of electronics manufacturing beyond the original core districts.
