In 1342, the mathematician Levi ben Gerson (Gersonides) provided an early written description of the cross-staff (also called Jacob’s staff). The device measured angles by sliding a crosspiece along a graduated staff, making it useful for astronomy and, later, navigation. This documentation helped standardize a tool that would later be adapted for shipboard latitude finding.
Over the 1400s, European astronomers and instrument makers used cross-staff variants (often called the radius astronomicus) to measure angular separations in the sky. This work mattered for navigation because the same angle-measuring principle could be redirected from star-to-star measurements to horizon-to-Sun (or horizon-to-star) measurements. The period built practical skills in making, calibrating, and reading graduated scales.
By the late 1400s, mariners were using a simplified, heavy astrolabe (the mariner’s astrolabe) to determine latitude from the Sun’s noon altitude or from a known star. Its weight and open frame helped reduce wind effects compared with delicate land astrolabes, but it still had to hang vertically and was hard to steady on a moving ship. Even with these limits, it provided a workable method for ocean navigation during expanding Atlantic voyages.
Early 1500s nautical writing records the cross-staff (often called balestilha in Iberian contexts) as a practical instrument for measuring celestial altitude to estimate latitude. This shift was important because it moved a land-and-astronomy angle tool into routine shipboard work. It also began a long period where navigators compared instruments mainly by ease of use and repeatability on a rolling deck.
In the early-to-mid 1500s, printed scientific works described refined cross-staff forms and more systematic graduations for measuring angles. Better scaling and clearer reading systems made the instrument easier to reproduce consistently, supporting wider use in both astronomy and navigation. This period linked instrument making to the growth of technical printing, which helped spread standard methods.
By the mid-1500s, mariner’s astrolabes increasingly used heavier, cast brass frames rather than lighter sheet forms. The extra mass improved steadiness in wind and ship motion, which could help reduce reading errors in altitude measurements. These practical construction changes show how instrument design responded directly to the challenges of open-ocean navigation.

It was relatively cheap and simple, but it required looking toward the Sun for solar observations, which was uncomfortable and risky. These tradeoffs pushed navigators and instrument makers to look for safer, more user-friendly designs.
In 1594, English navigator John Davis described a back-observation instrument (a type of backstaff, later called the Davis quadrant) designed to measure the Sun’s altitude with the Sun behind the observer. Instead of staring at the Sun, the navigator aligned a shadow with the horizon sight, improving comfort and often usability. This was a major turning point because it directly targeted the cross-staff’s most serious practical drawback.
Through the early 1600s, the backstaff spread in use for solar altitude measurements because it was easier to use under many conditions and avoided direct solar viewing. The cross-staff still appeared in practice, but navigators increasingly favored instruments that reduced strain and simplified the observation. In effect, instrument choice began to reflect human factors (comfort and repeatability) as much as theoretical accuracy.
Mariner’s astrolabes continued to be used in the 1600s, but their dependence on hanging freely made them vulnerable to wind and ship motion. As cross-staff and backstaff designs matured, they offered alternatives that were cheaper and often easier to operate on deck. Over time, this reduced the astrolabe’s role in day-to-day navigation.
By the later 1600s, the cross-staff was increasingly replaced in many maritime settings by backstaff methods for routine solar observations. The main reason was practical: the backstaff let navigators measure the Sun’s altitude without looking directly at the Sun, and it was often more manageable on a moving ship. This marked a clear shift from earlier “front-sighting” instruments toward safer observing techniques.
By the end of the 1600s, the nautical astrolabe had largely given way to newer angle-measuring instruments, and the backstaff family had become a common solution for solar altitude work. This evolution shows a consistent pattern: instruments changed to fit shipboard reality—wind, motion, speed of observation, and the navigator’s eyesight. The result was more reliable latitude practice for long-distance voyages, helping support expanding global sea routes.
