Levi ben Gerson describes the cross-staff
Labels: Levi ben, Cross-staffIn 1342, the mathematician Levi ben Gerson (Gersonides) provided an early written description of the cross-staff (also called Jacob’s staff). The device measured angles by sliding a crosspiece along a graduated staff, making it useful for astronomy and, later, navigation. This documentation helped standardize a tool that would later be adapted for shipboard latitude finding.
