On this date the ship Victoria arrived back in Spain, completing the first circumnavigation and bringing a valuable cargo of spices. The voyage demonstrated that Spain could reach Asia by sailing west, but it also exposed the huge costs and risks of the route. Spanish policy debates quickly focused on whether to reinforce the claim to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas) and how to supply future fleets.
The Crown created the Council of the Indies as a top-level governing body for overseas territories. This strengthened central decision-making for exploration, finance, law, and appointments, including long-distance ventures tied to Asian trade. It set up a more formal system for planning and controlling expeditions after the Magellan–Elcano return.
Charles I authorized a major follow-up fleet under García Jofre de Loaísa to reach and hold the Moluccas and support earlier survivors. It was a direct Spanish response to the strategic opportunity shown by the first circumnavigation. The expedition suffered heavy losses, showing that the Magellan Strait route was possible but extremely difficult to use repeatedly.
A small remnant of the Loaísa expedition eventually reached the Spice Islands, while leaders including Loaísa and Juan Sebastián Elcano died on the voyage. Spain’s ability to send reinforcements proved limited, and Portuguese power in the region remained strong. The ordeal pushed Spanish planners to reconsider how to sustain an Asian presence from Europe via the Magellan Strait.
Hernán Cortés sponsored Álvaro de Saavedra Cerón to cross the Pacific from Mexico to support Spanish forces and interests in the Spice Islands. This move highlights a policy shift: using New Spain as a logistics base for Pacific expeditions, rather than relying only on Spain-to-Asia voyages. It also tested whether a reliable return route across the Pacific could be found.
Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Zaragoza, setting a boundary for their Asian spheres and addressing the dispute over the Moluccas. The agreement reduced Spain’s official leverage in the Spice Islands and encouraged Spanish authorities to look for alternative ways to benefit from Asian trade. It also shaped later expeditions by pushing Spain toward routes and targets that could be defended politically as well as militarily.
Saavedra’s voyage reached the Moluccas region but failed to establish a dependable eastbound return route to Mexico; Saavedra died during the attempt. The failure made clear that Spanish Pacific operations were constrained by wind systems and currents that were not yet understood. This lesson later drove renewed efforts to find a workable “return passage” (tornaviaje) and influenced how expeditions were outfitted and supplied.
After years of conflict and negotiation in Southeast Asia, surviving members of the Loaísa expedition were allowed to leave and gradually made their way back to Europe. Their return underscored the human and financial costs of trying to hold the Moluccas directly. Reports from survivors added practical geographic knowledge for Spanish decision-makers, even as Spain’s official position in the region weakened after Zaragoza.
Andrés de Urdaneta, a key survivor, arrived in Lisbon after traveling on Portuguese shipping routes; Portuguese authorities confiscated his maps and journals. This illustrates how tightly Portugal controlled Asian navigation information and why Spain struggled to build a reliable operational picture of the Pacific. The episode also shows that Spain’s Asian ambitions depended not only on ships, but on protected knowledge and planning.
In Spain, Urdaneta was interviewed and produced a detailed written report on the expedition’s events, routes, and conditions in the region. These kinds of reports supported a policy style that relied on centralized review and lessons learned after failures. They also helped keep interest alive in Pacific strategy even when direct control of the Moluccas looked unrealistic.
The Council of the Indies received its first ordinances in the early 1540s, reflecting a maturing administrative framework for overseas governance. More formal procedures supported tighter oversight of spending, appointments, and planning for risky long-distance ventures. This mattered for Pacific expeditions, which required careful financing, ship preparation, and coordination between Spain and New Spain.
Commissioned in New Spain, Ruy López de Villalobos led a fleet from Barra de Navidad toward the islands Spain called the “Islands of the West” (Philippines). The plan aimed to strengthen Spain’s presence in the western Pacific and create a base linked to Asian trade, while still operating under the constraints imposed by Portuguese power and prior treaties. This represented a practical pivot: targeting the Philippines as a stepping-stone rather than trying only to hold the Moluccas directly.
Facing hunger and setbacks, Villalobos’s expedition tried to secure food and organize resupply, including dispatching ships to attempt crossings back toward New Spain. One ship was refitted and sent under Yñigo Ortiz de Retez, but the attempt did not succeed and the expedition remained trapped near Portuguese-controlled areas. These failures reinforced a core problem for Spanish policy: without a reliable return route and supply chain, colonies and garrisons could not be sustained.
Villalobos died in Portuguese custody in the Moluccas, and the expedition’s broader goals were not achieved. The outcome marked a clear endpoint for this phase (1522–1550): Spain had tested multiple westward and Pacific-based approaches but still lacked the navigation knowledge and logistics needed for durable settlement in the western Pacific. Later, Spain would return with more deliberate planning from New Spain—most notably the Legazpi expedition in 1564—building on lessons from these earlier failures.
