In the early 1480s, King João II of Portugal expanded royal exploration along West Africa to gather trade information and look for a sea route toward Asia. Diogo Cão was selected as one of the captains tasked with sailing beyond the equator and reporting back with usable geographic knowledge.
During the same exploratory phase, Cão continued south along the coast and marked Cape Santa Maria (in today’s Angola) with another padrão. The inscription linked the act to King João II and dated the discovery, showing that Portugal was building a chain of documented landfalls.
In 1482, Diogo Cão reached the mouth of the Congo River, a major geographic landmark for European navigation. This landing helped Portuguese planners understand that a large river system and organized societies controlled the region, shaping later diplomatic and trade efforts.
Cão set up a padrão (a carved stone pillar topped with a cross) at the Congo estuary to record the landfall and assert Portuguese presence. These pillars served as both political symbols and practical navigation markers for future voyages.
After reaching the Congo area, Cão made initial contact with people connected to the Kingdom of Kongo and began limited exchange. These early meetings showed the Portuguese that they were dealing with a powerful inland kingdom, not just small coastal communities.
By 8 April 1484, Cão was back in Lisbon and received royal recognition for his results. This mattered because it confirmed that the crown valued his findings and intended to continue the Congo-centered strategy with more voyages and firmer diplomacy.
Cão sailed again in the mid-1480s, revisiting the Congo region and then continuing farther south along the Atlantic coast. The second voyage focused on extending mapped coastline and reinforcing Portugal’s presence through additional padrões.
Portuguese practice in this period included transporting local elites as interpreters or envoys to support future diplomacy. Sources describe Cão taking Kongo nobles to Portugal and then returning to Kongo on his later voyage, a key step toward formal relations.
In 1485, Cão erected a padrão at Cape Cross (in present-day Namibia), leaving a dated inscription naming King João II and the expedition. This marker shows how far south the voyage reached and became one of the most famous surviving physical traces of early Portuguese exploration.
Cão’s second voyage is widely treated as ending with his disappearance or death in the Cape Cross area by 1486. His loss did not stop Portuguese exploration, but it did close his personal role in the push down the southwest African coast.
The new information and relationships created by Cão’s voyages shaped later crown policy toward the Kingdom of Kongo. Documentary histories describe how these early meetings helped prompt larger-scale diplomatic plans, including a major embassy sent in 1491 (beyond Cão’s lifetime).
In 1893, the original Cape Cross stone pillar was removed from the Namibian coast and taken to Germany during the colonial era. This relocation turned a navigation-and-claim marker from the 1400s into a contested museum object tied to later European imperial rule.
In 2019, the German Historical Museum decided to return the Cape Cross “Stone Cross” to Namibia. The return mattered as a public step toward addressing colonial-era removals and placed the artifact back in the country whose coastline it originally marked.
