King Manuel I issued letters patent on May 12, 1500, backing Gaspar Corte-Real to search for lands west and granting him rights tied to any discoveries. This fit Portugal’s wider push to secure new routes and territories in the North Atlantic as overseas exploration accelerated.
In June 1500, Corte-Real sailed from Lisbon on a northern expedition. Accounts describe him provisioning in the Azores and then heading toward Greenland, where ice and weather limited further progress. The voyage helped Portuguese pilots refine routes and expectations for the far North Atlantic.
By late 1500 (or very early 1501), Corte-Real returned to Portugal after failing to push far along Greenland due to ice. The return did not end the effort: it set up a second, larger expedition intended to take a more westerly course to reach land believed to lie across the Atlantic.
On May 15, 1501, Corte-Real left Lisbon again, this time with three caravels. The goal was to reach and explore the North American coast more directly than on the first voyage, expanding Portugal’s knowledge and claims in the North Atlantic.
During the 1501 voyage, reports describe landfall in what is now Labrador and/or Newfoundland, with notes about forests and other resources. Contemporary observers understood this as a significant discovery of new land across the North Atlantic, even as exact locations remained unclear in early reports.
Accounts of the 1501 expedition report that Corte-Real seized Indigenous people and brought captives back toward Portugal as enslaved persons. This violence was tied to the economics of exploration, where some voyages sought profit not only from resources but also from human trafficking.
One of Corte-Real’s ships reached Lisbon in early October 1501 carrying captives and news of the voyage. Venetian ambassador Pietro Pasqualigo described the arrival in a letter dated October 19, 1501, making it one of the key contemporary written sources for the expedition’s outcome.
A second caravel from the 1501 expedition was reported to have arrived shortly after the first, also bringing enslaved captives. Later historians note dispatches that describe the king receiving these reports, showing how quickly the voyage’s results became court business and strategic information.
Corte-Real’s own vessel did not return from the 1501 voyage, and his fate remains unknown. The loss turned the expedition into both a geographic milestone and a cautionary episode about the risks of North Atlantic navigation and separation at sea.
In 1502, the Cantino planisphere—secret Portuguese cartographic intelligence later smuggled to Italy—captured recent discoveries in both the Atlantic and beyond. Its depiction of the North Atlantic helped fix the idea of newly charted lands (including Newfoundland) within Portugal’s sphere of interest and competition.
In 1502, Gaspar’s brother Miguel Corte-Real led a search expedition to the Newfoundland region. Like Gaspar, Miguel failed to return, deepening the tragedy and effectively ending the Corte-Real family’s direct role in the earliest Portuguese push toward northeastern North America.
After losing both Gaspar (1501) and Miguel (1502), a follow-up search failed, and later efforts were blocked by King Manuel I. The decision marked a clear closing outcome for this episode: Portuguese knowledge and claims advanced on maps, but the Corte-Real-led push to Newfoundland ended in disappearances and official restraint.
