Backed by King Manuel I, Vasco da Gama left Lisbon with a fleet of four vessels to find a sea route to India that could bypass overland and Mediterranean trade routes. The ships carried interpreters and stone markers (padrões) used to claim and record Portuguese landfalls. This departure launched the first Portuguese voyage to reach India by rounding Africa and crossing the Indian Ocean.
After passing the Canary Islands, da Gama’s fleet reached Santiago in the Cape Verde Islands to take on supplies and prepare for the long Atlantic leg. The stop helped the expedition stock up before turning away from the African coast. From here, da Gama followed a strategy used by earlier Portuguese navigators: sailing far into the Atlantic to find favorable winds.
Instead of hugging the West African coastline, the fleet made a wide detour through the South Atlantic to avoid difficult currents near the Gulf of Guinea. After months at sea, they reached Santa Helena Bay in southern Africa. This marked their approach to the critical challenge of rounding the Cape of Good Hope.
After delays from winds and currents, the fleet rounded the Cape of Good Hope, the geographic gateway from the Atlantic into the Indian Ocean route system. Rounding the cape was a major test for late-15th-century sailing and a key step toward reaching eastern Africa and, ultimately, India. This success built on earlier Portuguese exploration, especially Bartolomeu Dias’ voyage.
The fleet anchored at Mossel Bay, where da Gama set up a padrão as an official marker of the voyage. They also broke up the storeship, a decision that reduced the number of vessels but helped redistribute supplies and manage the fleet. This stop shows how exploration voyages often required major logistical choices mid-journey.
Sailing up the southeast African coast, the fleet reached the coast of Natal on December 25. The timing reinforced Portuguese naming practices tied to the Christian calendar. Moving north along this coast brought the expedition closer to established Indian Ocean trade ports.
Da Gama’s ships arrived at Mozambique Island, part of a coastal trade network long connected to Muslim merchants in the Indian Ocean. Initial contact was complicated by local expectations and by Portuguese attempts to fit into unfamiliar diplomatic norms. Suspicion and conflict pushed the fleet to leave and continue north toward more welcoming ports.
The fleet reached Mombasa but encountered hostility and did not secure reliable support. Shortly after, they anchored at Malindi, a rival port that proved friendlier to the Portuguese. This shift mattered because the voyage now depended on local knowledge to cross the open Indian Ocean.
At Malindi, da Gama obtained an experienced pilot familiar with the monsoon wind system needed to sail east to India. Later stories sometimes named the pilot as the famous navigator Ibn Majid, but modern scholarship generally rejects that identification. With the pilot’s guidance, the fleet departed for the most difficult leg: a long open-water crossing to the Malabar Coast.
The expedition arrived at Calicut (now Kozhikode), a major Indian Ocean trading center on India’s southwest coast. Da Gama set up a padrão to document and claim the achievement of reaching India by sea from Portugal. The landing proved that a direct ocean route was possible, but it did not guarantee a stable trading relationship.
Relations with the Zamorin of Calicut deteriorated, in part because Portuguese gifts and trade goods did not match local expectations and because established Muslim merchant communities opposed Portuguese entry into the spice trade. Da Gama left near the end of August, and his timing forced the fleet to sail against monsoon conditions on the return. This decision turned the homeward journey into a severe test of endurance and planning.
After nearly three months at sea, the weakened fleet reached Malindi again. Many sailors suffered and died from scurvy, a vitamin-deficiency disease common on long voyages without fresh food. With too few crew members to manage all vessels, da Gama ordered the burning of the São Rafael, reducing the fleet further.
Sailing south from East Africa, the remaining ships rounded the Cape of Good Hope again, now heading back into the Atlantic. The return rounding confirmed that the route was navigable in both directions, though extremely demanding. A storm later separated the ships, showing how fragile long-distance coordination could be in this era.
The caravel Berrio reached the Tagus River first, bringing early confirmation that the expedition had returned from India. This news was politically important because it validated Portugal’s strategy of reaching Asian markets by sea. It also allowed the crown to plan follow-up voyages before da Gama himself arrived.
Vasco da Gama arrived back in Lisbon in September 1499 after a voyage lasting more than two years. The expedition suffered heavy losses (including many deaths from scurvy), but it demonstrated a workable sea route linking Portugal to India around Africa. This outcome helped set the stage for regular Portuguese voyages and growing Portuguese influence in the Indian Ocean trade world.
