Cortés commissions Alvarado to invade Guatemala

In late 1523, Hernán Cortés sent Pedro de Alvarado toward what is now Guatemala with Spanish soldiers and many Indigenous allies from central Mexico. This began the main phase of Spanish conquest in the Guatemalan highlands.
