Christopher Columbus reached the island the Taíno called Borikén during his second voyage and claimed it for the Spanish Crown, naming it San Juan Bautista. Although there was no immediate large settlement, this act set Spain’s legal and political claim that later colonizers used to justify conquest and rule.
Juan Ponce de León arrived with colonists and began Spain’s first sustained settlement effort on the island. This expedition marked the practical start of colonization, including the search for gold and the push to bring Taíno communities under Spanish control.
Ponce de León founded Caparra, the first Spanish town in Puerto Rico, on high ground near the protected harbor of San Juan Bay. Caparra became an early base for mining, farming, and government, but its location proved inconvenient and unhealthy for many settlers.
Settlers moved the main town site from inland Caparra to a small islet at the entrance of San Juan Bay, closer to shipping and defense. This shift showed how the colony’s priorities were changing toward protecting the port and controlling trade routes rather than relying on an inland base.
King Ferdinand II confirmed Ponce de León’s authority as governor, strengthening the official colonial administration. With royal backing, Spanish leaders expanded mining and settlement and increased demands on Taíno labor and tribute.
In 1511, Taíno communities led by Agüeybaná II launched a large uprising against Spanish rule and forced labor practices tied to mining and encomienda. The fighting became a prolonged conflict that weakened Taíno society and pushed Spain to intensify military control of the island.
Spanish authorities founded San Germán on Puerto Rico’s west coast area to extend control beyond the San Juan region. The settlement reflected Spain’s effort to secure territory, organize settlers, and support mining and farming away from the main harbor.
Pope Julius II established the Diocese of Puerto Rico and appointed Alonso Manso as its first bishop. The diocese helped the colonial project by organizing conversion efforts and building church institutions that supported Spanish authority in daily life.
Alonso Manso was consecrated as bishop, confirming church leadership for the new diocese. Over time, church structures—parishes, schools, and religious instruction—became a key part of colonial governance alongside military and civil officials.
Spain issued the Laws of Burgos, an early colonial legal code meant to regulate Spanish treatment of Indigenous peoples while still requiring Indigenous labor under Spanish oversight. These laws influenced how encomienda-style labor and “conversion” policies were applied across the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico.
Spanish officials adopted the Requerimiento, a proclamation asserting Spain’s right to rule and warning that resistance could be met with war and enslavement. While often unreadable or untranslated to Indigenous audiences, it became part of the legal framework used to justify coercion during conquest in the region.
The newer settlement received the formal name Ciudad de Puerto Rico de San Juan Bautista (commonly shortened over time to San Juan). Naming and organizing the town helped fix it as the colony’s political and commercial center, linking government, church, and port activities in one place.
French corsairs attacked and pillaged San Germán, showing how vulnerable early Spanish settlements were to rival European powers and private raiders. These attacks pushed Puerto Rico toward a more defensive strategy centered on protecting key ports and population centers.
Spain began building La Fortaleza in San Juan as a defensive structure to protect the harbor and the colonial government. Its construction reflects the colony’s shift from early mining camps toward permanent institutions designed to hold territory against raids and foreign threats.
La Fortaleza was finished, giving San Juan a major fortified complex tied to colonial administration. By this stage, Puerto Rico’s early “conquest” period had become an organized colony focused on port defense, governance, and longer-term settlement rather than rapid gold extraction alone.
