Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, drawing an agreed line to divide many future overseas claims. Although it did not name Yucatán, it helped legitimize Spanish expansion in the Americas in European diplomacy. This broader framework set the stage for later royal licenses to conquer and govern new territories.
The Spanish Crown issued Francisco de Montejo a charter (including the title adelantado) authorizing him to conquer and colonize the Yucatán Peninsula. This made the Yucatán project a royal enterprise, not just a private raid, and it opened the door to organizing multi-year campaigns with settlers, supplies, and formal town governments.
Montejo’s first campaign arrived off eastern Yucatán in late 1527, using Cozumel as an initial contact point. The Spaniards attempted to secure footholds and move inland, but faced strong resistance, disease, and supply problems. These early failures showed that conquering the Maya lowlands would be slower and harder than the conquest of central Mexico.
After setbacks on the east coast, the Montejo enterprise shifted its approach and tried advancing from the western side of the peninsula. The goal was to find better supply lines, establish towns, and build alliances that could support inland control. This change in strategy reflects how geography and logistics shaped the conquest as much as battlefield outcomes.
The Spaniards established a lasting municipal government at Campeche, turning it into a key coastal base for further expansion. With a secure port, Spanish forces could receive reinforcements and supplies more reliably than in earlier attempts. Campeche later served as one of the main anchors of Spanish authority in the peninsula.
A new Spanish town council was founded at the Maya site of T’hó and named Mérida. This created a political and military center in northern Yucatán that could coordinate campaigns, tribute demands, and missionary activity. Mérida became the core of Spanish colonial government in Yucatán for centuries.
The Spanish founded Valladolid to extend control into the eastern region, where several Maya provinces remained resistant. The site was soon changed because the original location was unhealthy for settlers, showing how environment affected colonial plans. Establishing Valladolid helped the Spanish tighten their network of towns beyond Mérida and Campeche.
Spanish authorities moved Valladolid to its current location, built over the Maya town of Zací, reusing stone from existing structures. Relocation strengthened the settlement’s long-term viability and deepened Spanish presence in the east. It also intensified local disruption by physically reshaping an Indigenous urban landscape into a colonial one.
An alliance of eastern Maya provinces launched a coordinated revolt against Spanish control, attacking settlements and their allies. The uprising lasted months and forced the Spaniards to mobilize reinforcements to hold their key towns. Its defeat is often treated as the final major step in conquering northern Yucatán, even as southern lowland areas remained beyond Spanish reach.
Spain and England signed the Treaty of Madrid, in which Spain recognized certain English possessions in the Americas, including Jamaica. This mattered for the Maya lowlands because growing non-Spanish activity in the western Caribbean and nearby coasts complicated Spanish control and supply routes. Over time, these shifting frontiers affected Spanish strategies toward the still-independent Maya regions to the south and east.
Spanish forces attacked and took Nojpetén (also known as Tayasal), the island capital of the Itza at Lake Petén Itzá. The fall of Nojpetén ended the last large independent Maya kingdom in the region and marked the late completion of conquest in the deep lowlands. It also opened the way for tighter colonial administration and mission efforts in Petén.
During the Caste War of Yucatán, Maya communities formed an enduring resistance stronghold around a shrine and settlement known as Chan Santa Cruz. Its emergence shows that conquest did not end Indigenous political organization; Maya groups continued to build new power centers centuries after Spanish campaigns. The long conflict highlights the lasting social and economic tensions created by colonial rule in the peninsula.
