In 1552–1553, an association of London merchants organized an expedition to seek a sea route to Asia by sailing north of Russia (the “Northeast Passage”). The plan linked exploration to trade: if a route could be found, England could reach Asian markets without relying on routes dominated by Iberian powers.
On May 10, 1553, three ships under Sir Hugh Willoughby (with the pilot Richard Chancellor) left England to search for a Northeast Passage. The expedition aimed to push beyond familiar North Sea and Norwegian waters into the Arctic, relying on new navigation practices and ambitious planning.
After storms separated the fleet, Chancellor’s ship reached the White Sea area in late August 1553. This did not open a Northeast Passage, but it created a workable sea link to northern Russia, which proved commercially important even without a route to Asia.
In the winter of 1553–1554, Chancellor traveled overland to Moscow and met Tsar Ivan IV. The visit established direct diplomatic and commercial contact between England and Russia, shifting the expedition’s legacy from “finding Asia” to building a new trade relationship.
On February 6, 1555, the Muscovy Company was founded by royal charter, formalizing English trade with Russia. The company helped fund Arctic voyages and improved knowledge of northern seas, even as a true Northeast Passage remained out of reach.
In 1556–1557, Muscovy Company navigator Stephen Borough explored toward the Kara Strait between Novaya Zemlya and Vaygach Island. Ice blocked further progress, showing how sea-ice conditions could halt even well-led voyages and making the Kara Sea a key “gate” in later plans.
In 1580, Arthur Pet and Charles Jackman led a Muscovy Company attempt to reach Asia along Russia’s Arctic coast. The voyage penetrated the Kara Sea, an important milestone, but could not continue to a full passage because of ice and the limits of ships and supplies.
In 1594, Dutch navigators—including Willem Barentsz and Cornelis Nay—sailed from Texel to test routes around Novaya Zemlya. Nay’s party passed through the Yugor Strait into the Kara Sea, encouraging a larger follow-up effort and making the search a national project tied to trade ambitions.
In June 1596, on his third attempt, Barentsz’s expedition discovered Bear Island and then Spitsbergen (Svalbard). These discoveries mattered for navigation and mapping in the northern seas and later supported Arctic whaling, even though the passage to Asia still could not be sailed through.
In late 1596–1597, Barentsz’s ship became trapped by ice near Novaya Zemlya, forcing the crew to overwinter in a shelter known as Het Behouden Huys (“The Saved House”). The wintering became famous because it showed Europeans could survive a high-Arctic winter, but also highlighted how ice could defeat the best-planned route search.
After leaving Novaya Zemlya in open boats, Willem Barentsz died on June 20, 1597. His death underscored the human cost of the Northeast Passage searches and helped shift later expeditions toward better provisioning, improved charts, and more cautious route planning.
In 1598, Gerrit de Veer’s account of Barentsz’s voyages was first published in Dutch and quickly circulated in other languages. The book helped standardize European understanding of Arctic seas, ice hazards, and practical survival lessons, making it a key reference for later navigators.
In 1607, Henry Hudson sailed for the Muscovy Company to search for a route toward Asia via the high Arctic. He reached the Svalbard area but was blocked by ice, confirming that even farther-north strategies did not avoid the central problem: thick, shifting sea ice.
On April 22, 1608, Hudson sailed again for a Northeast Passage, aiming to pass between Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya. Ice stopped progress and he returned to England later that year, a reminder that repeated attempts could improve charts but still end without a through route.
In 1617, the Treaty of Stolbovo ended war between Sweden and Russia and left Russia cut off from the Baltic Sea. This increased the strategic importance of northern routes and the White Sea port region for Western trade—an economic background that kept interest alive in northern navigation, even when the Northeast Passage itself remained impractical.
By the early 1600s, European activity around Svalbard expanded into whaling and sealing, supported by the charts and place-names created during earlier passage searches. This marked a practical outcome of the Northeast Passage era (1553–1660): even without a navigable route to Asia, the voyages strengthened northern European navigation, trade connections to Russia, and Arctic cartography.
