In 1594, Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz left Amsterdam as part of an expedition looking for a Northeast Passage to Asia. He reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya and followed it north before ice forced a turn back. The voyage helped start a Dutch pattern of Arctic sailing tied closely to trade goals, not just exploration.
In 1595, Barentsz led another Dutch expedition toward the strait between the Asian coast and Vaygach Island (the Kara Strait area). The ships arrived too late in the season and met ice, again failing to open a reliable sea route to Asia. Repeated setbacks clarified that Arctic commerce would require better planning, stronger ships, and new strategies.
In June 1596, Barentsz’s third voyage took a more northerly route and sighted Bjørnøya (Bear Island) and then Spitsbergen (Svalbard). This created a major new point of reference for later Dutch and other European voyages. The new knowledge soon supported commercial hunting and whaling, not only exploration.
Late in the 1596 voyage, Barentsz’s ship became trapped in ice near Novaya Zemlya, forcing the crew to winter ashore in the far north. The group survived the winter and tried to return by open boats in June 1597, but Barentsz died during the journey. Their survival story and observations became part of the practical knowledge used in later Arctic ventures.
In 1612, Amsterdam merchant Lambert van Tweenhuysen backed a Dutch expedition to Spitsbergen under Willem Cornelisz. van Muyden to hunt walrus. Walrus products (especially ivory) were valuable, and the voyage showed that Arctic hunting could be organized as a business. This step linked Dutch Arctic exploration more directly to seasonal profit-making voyages.
In 1613, Dutch backers again sent van Muyden north, this time focused on whaling. Bowhead whales were abundant in Arctic waters, and whale oil was in strong demand for lighting and industrial uses. These early seasons helped establish Spitsbergen as a major center of European commercial whaling.
On January 27, 1614, Dutch cities and investors formed the Noordsche Compagnie (Northern Company) to organize and monopolize whaling in the Arctic, especially around Spitsbergen. A monopoly meant fewer Dutch internal rivals and more coordinated logistics, such as ships, crews, and shore support. It also increased conflict with other nations who wanted access to the same whaling grounds.
By 1615, Dutch fleets were using force to hold favored bays and anchorages in Spitsbergen’s whaling areas, pushing back English and other competitors. Control of safe harbors mattered because early whaling relied on working close to shore and landing equipment and crews. This period shows how quickly commercial hunting turned into geopolitical rivalry over access and seasonal bases.
In 1619, Dutch and Danish whalers founded Smeerenburg on Amsterdam Island (northwest Spitsbergen) as a shore-based processing site. Whalers boiled blubber in large kettles to produce oil, making the station a seasonal industrial hub. Smeerenburg’s growth shows the shift from simple hunting trips to a more organized Arctic “factory” system.
During the 1620s, Smeerenburg became increasingly tied to the Noordsche Compagnie’s chamber system, with multiple Dutch port cities operating their own sections. The settlement expanded from temporary tents and ovens into more permanent wooden buildings and heavy equipment. This structure helped Dutch whaling scale up, but it also made the industry dependent on maintaining shore sites and nearby whale stocks.
In 1633–1634, a small Dutch party overwintered at Smeerenburg to protect facilities and supplies from rivals. Overwintering was dangerous due to extreme cold, darkness, and limited food, but it could help a company hold valuable infrastructure. The effort shows how competition pushed Dutch whaling beyond summer sailing into longer-risk Arctic commitments.
In 1642, the Noordsche Compagnie ended, and its monopoly over Dutch Arctic whaling was dissolved. Without a single chartered cartel, Dutch whaling became more competitive, with private interests and different ports expanding their own operations. This change marks an endpoint for the first monopoly-driven phase of Dutch Arctic commercial enterprise and a transition toward more open, shifting patterns of northern hunting and trade.
