The Dutch Republic granted a charter to the Dutch West India Company (WIC), giving it a trade monopoly and broad powers to wage war, build forts, and plant colonies in the Atlantic world. This created the main institution that would later attempt to seize Brazil’s sugar-producing regions as part of a wider struggle against Iberian power.
After raising capital, WIC leadership adopted the “Groot Desseyn” (Grand Design), a strategy to capture key Iberian positions in Brazil and West Africa. The goal was to control both sugar production in Brazil and the enslaved-labor supply chain from Africa, weakening Spanish and Portuguese war finances.
A WIC expedition captured Salvador (then the main city of Portuguese Brazil), marking the first major Dutch attempt to take a strategic Atlantic colony by force. Holding the city proved difficult because Portugal and Spain could concentrate a large counterattack on this single target.
A large Spanish-Portuguese expedition besieged Salvador and forced the Dutch to surrender the city. The quick loss showed the risks of attacking a heavily defended capital without enough local support and supplies, pushing Dutch planners to refocus on other targets.
The WIC invaded Pernambuco—one of the world’s most important sugar-producing regions—taking Olinda and then Recife. This foothold became the core of “New Holland” (Dutch Brazil) and tied the Dutch project directly to the Pernambuco sugar economy.
Dutch forces captured territory in Paraíba, extending control beyond Pernambuco and tightening their grip on the sugar coast. This expansion mattered because Dutch Brazil depended on controlling multiple ports, plantations, and river routes—not just a single city.
John Maurice of Nassau-Siegen arrived to lead the colony as governor-general, aiming to stabilize Dutch rule and rebuild the war-torn sugar economy. His administration is often treated as the high point of Dutch Brazil because it combined military consolidation with urban planning and diplomacy toward local elites.
Dutch forces attempted again to take Salvador, but the siege ended in a Portuguese-Spanish victory. The failure limited Dutch expansion and highlighted how hard it was to defeat entrenched defenses far from the Dutch base in Pernambuco.
Portugal’s restoration of independence from Spain reshaped alliances and priorities across the Atlantic. For Dutch Brazil, Portuguese nationalism increased pressure on Portuguese-speaking planters and soldiers to resist Dutch rule, even while broader European diplomacy shifted.
To support Brazilian sugar production, the WIC seized Luanda in Angola, a major port in the Atlantic slave trade. Controlling this route helped Dutch Brazil obtain forced labor for plantations, linking events in Brazil directly to Dutch campaigns in West Africa.
Facing heavy expenses, the WIC recalled John Maurice to Europe, reducing political and military support in Brazil. Soon after, tensions with Portuguese planters—especially over debt and control of the sugar economy—became harder to manage without strong leadership.
Local Portuguese-led rebels in Pernambuco formally committed to revolt, launching what is often called the Insurrection of Pernambuco. The uprising mattered because it turned Dutch Brazil from a conquest project into a prolonged counterinsurgency, steadily shrinking Dutch control to fortified coastal areas.
Insurgent forces defeated a Dutch column at Tabocas, an early battlefield success for the rebellion. This victory boosted rebel confidence and helped shift momentum, showing that local fighters could beat better-armed Dutch troops in the region’s terrain.
Portuguese-Brazilian forces defeated the Dutch near Guararapes, using tactics suited to local conditions. The battle became a turning point because it reduced Dutch ability to operate outside Recife and its forts, tightening the siege-like pressure on the colony.
A second major battle at Guararapes ended in another Dutch defeat, further damaging morale and manpower. After this, the Dutch still held Recife, but their wider project in northeastern Brazil was no longer sustainable on the ground.
After a prolonged blockade and siege of Recife, Dutch authorities signed a capitulation agreement at Taborda, accepting the loss of their Brazilian possessions. The terms included evacuation provisions, signaling an official end to the WIC’s military hold on Pernambuco.
Portuguese troops entered Recife, completing the reconquest and dissolving Dutch Brazil as a functioning colony. This outcome reshaped Atlantic trade by returning Pernambuco’s sugar region to Portuguese control and forcing Dutch settlers and allies to leave or adapt to the new regime.
Portugal and the Dutch Republic signed a treaty in which the Dutch formally recognized Portuguese sovereignty over New Holland (Dutch Brazil). In exchange, Portugal agreed to pay an indemnity, closing the diplomatic chapter after the military loss of Recife and ending major legal claims tied to the colony.
