The Dutch Republic merged competing merchant ventures into the United East India Company (VOC). The States General granted it a monopoly over Dutch trade in a vast zone stretching into the Indian and Pacific Oceans, encouraging long-distance voyages and systematic collection of navigation data.
Sailing for the VOC, Willem Janszoon in the Duyfken made landfall on the Cape York Peninsula, a first recorded European landfall on the Australian continent. The voyage also charted parts of the nearby coastline, providing early evidence that “southern lands” lay close to New Guinea.
Dutch captains began using the Brouwer Route: sailing south into the strong westerly winds of the “Roaring Forties,” then east across the Indian Ocean before turning north for Java. The faster route made the VOC’s Asia trade more efficient, but it also increased the risk of unintentionally hitting the little-known Australian coastline because longitude was hard to measure accurately at sea.
VOC captain Dirk Hartog reached the west coast of Australia at Shark Bay and went ashore on what is now Dirk Hartog Island. He left an inscribed pewter plate recording the visit, creating a durable piece of evidence for Dutch exploration and a marker that later expeditions could verify.
Hessel Gerritsz was appointed the VOC’s first exclusive cartographer, formalizing the company’s centralized handling of secret charts and sailing information. This role helped turn scattered voyage notes into standardized maps that could guide and protect VOC shipping and exploration.
Jan Pieterszoon Coen drove out rivals at Jacatra (Jakarta), burned the settlement, and founded Batavia on its ruins. Batavia became the VOC’s main administrative and logistical hub in Asia, strengthening the company’s ability to sponsor voyages and compile regional charts from a central base.
VOC ships under Frederik de Houtman encountered and plotted low islands and dangerous reefs off Western Australia. They were named “Abrolhos” (“look out”), reflecting their importance as a navigational warning for ships following the fast southern route.
VOC ships Pera and Arnhem sailed from Ambon to investigate regions near New Guinea and the coast earlier seen by Janszoon. They charted parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria and encountered Aboriginal groups, and the voyage is linked to the naming of Arnhem Land after the ship.
Hessel Gerritsz produced the Caert van't Landt van d'Eendracht, a nautical chart that compiled Dutch sightings along Western Australia, including landfalls and hazards. By gathering voyage results into a usable map, the VOC improved route planning and made further exploration easier to organize.
Sailing to Batavia, François Thijssen’s VOC ship ’t Gulden Zeepaert reached the Australian coast near Cape Leeuwin and continued eastward, charting a long stretch of coastline. The land was associated with Pieter Nuyts, the senior VOC official aboard, and the voyage expanded Dutch geographic knowledge beyond the west and north coasts.
The VOC ship Batavia struck Morning Reef in the Houtman Abrolhos, demonstrating how dangerous the Brouwer Route could be without reliable longitude measurements. The disaster became infamous for the violence among survivors and was later used to explain why Western Australia’s offshore reefs were a serious threat to company shipping.
Anthony van Diemen became governor-general in Batavia and promoted exploration to strengthen VOC trade and strategic knowledge. Under his administration, the VOC backed major voyages meant to clarify coastlines and sea routes in the southern oceans and the Pacific.
Abel Tasman left Batavia with ships Heemskerck and Zeehaen under VOC orders to explore the southern seas and search for new lands and routes. His voyage was carefully recorded in a journal, reflecting the VOC’s practice of turning exploration into usable navigational knowledge.
Tasman sighted land later called Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania, and made brief landings nearby. This helped confirm that a substantial landmass existed in the south and provided new reference points for mapping southern waters.
Tasman’s expedition became the first recorded European sighting of New Zealand and began coastal exploration. A violent encounter with Māori at Golden Bay shaped the voyage’s choices and limited direct contact, but the mapped observations still expanded European knowledge of the South Pacific’s geography.
After leaving New Zealand, Tasman sailed northeast and encountered island groups in Tonga and later Fiji. These sightings added key waypoints to VOC geographic knowledge and showed that the southern Pacific contained many inhabited islands important for navigation and potential contact.
Tasman completed the first voyage and returned to Batavia after nearly ten months. Although the VOC did not find the trade riches it hoped for, the voyage produced new charts and reports that reshaped European mapping of Australasia and the Pacific.
On a follow-up expedition, Tasman sailed from Batavia to clarify the relationship between New Guinea and the “South Land” (Australia). By coasting through the Gulf of Carpentaria and along northern and western Australia, the voyage added major coastline segments and helped define the region’s overall outline for VOC maps.
