John Hawkins began an English commercial raid-and-trading voyage that carried enslaved Africans from West Africa to the Spanish Caribbean. Hawkins’s third Atlantic venture, with Francis Drake among his captains, ended in disaster when Spanish forces attacked the English at San Juan de Ulúa near Veracruz. Only a small part of the English force escaped. The clash deepened hostility and helped push English seamen toward more aggressive privateering against Spanish shipping and ports.
Drake launched his first major independent expedition to the Caribbean and targeted Nombre de Dios, a key node in moving Peruvian treasure across the Isthmus of Panama. Although the initial assault failed after Drake was wounded, his forces stayed in the region, raided shipping, and captured treasure over the following months. The campaign showed how English privateering aimed at the logistics of Spain’s empire, not just isolated ships.
Francis Drake sailed from England with a small fleet on a voyage that combined exploration with covert attacks on Spanish interests, backed by high-level English support. The plan reflected a shift toward long-range operations in the Pacific, where Spain’s defenses were thinner. It also tied privateering to England’s growing strategic ambitions overseas.
Drake’s ship returned to Plymouth after circumnavigating the globe, bringing captured treasure and valuable intelligence on routes and ports. The voyage boosted Drake’s fame and strengthened the idea that England could operate on a global oceanic scale. It also intensified Spanish concerns about English attacks on transoceanic trade.
Open war broke out between England and Spain, turning privateering from semi-deniable raiding into a major wartime tool. English commanders and investors treated Spanish shipping and colonial ports as targets that could fund further operations. This conflict created the political space for new privateering voyages, including Cavendish’s.
During the early years of the war, Drake led a major expedition that seized Santo Domingo, a key Spanish city in the Caribbean. The attack demonstrated England’s ability to strike major colonial centers, not only merchant vessels. These assaults also hardened Spanish defenses and escalated the cycle of raid and retaliation.
Thomas Cavendish sailed with a small squadron intending to circumnavigate the globe while raiding Spanish shipping and coastal settlements. His voyage built directly on Drake’s example, showing that circumnavigation could be planned as a privateering strategy rather than an accidental outcome. It also expanded England’s experience in the Pacific and on long-distance logistics.
Off Baja California, Cavendish seized the large Spanish ship Santa Ana, which carried valuable goods and connected Spain’s Pacific empire to Asian trade. The capture showed that English privateers could disrupt Spanish wealth beyond the Atlantic, reaching the routes tied to the Philippines and Mexico. It was one of the most important single prizes of Cavendish’s voyage.
Cavendish returned to England after his circumnavigation, bringing wealth and reinforcing the privateering-circumnavigation template. His success helped keep investor and government interest focused on maritime raids as a way to weaken Spain and fund further ventures. The voyage also contributed to England’s growing navigational knowledge of global routes.
Late in the war, Drake and Hawkins led another large expedition aimed at Spain’s Atlantic empire, but it struggled to achieve its goals. Spanish forces fought back effectively, including actions around the Caribbean that disrupted English plans. The campaign marked a turning point: the early momentum of Elizabethan “sea dog” privateering was harder to sustain against improved Spanish defenses.
John Hawkins died at sea during the 1595–1596 expedition, ending the career of a key organizer of Elizabethan naval power and overseas ventures. He had been central not only as a commander but also as a naval administrator who helped shape England’s fighting fleet. His death symbolized the passing of the first generation that pioneered this style of Atlantic privateering.
England and Spain signed the Treaty of London, formally ending the long war that had turned privateering into a central tool of English policy. The agreement reduced official support for raids on Spanish commerce and shifted the political conditions under which English seamen operated. As a closing outcome, it marked the end of the classic Elizabethan privateering era associated with Drake, Hawkins, and Cavendish.
