In June 1596, Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz sighted land later known as Spitsbergen (Svalbard) while searching for a Northeast Passage. European reports of this Arctic archipelago helped put its coasts on navigation charts. These voyages laid the groundwork for later commercial voyages focused on walrus, whales, and trade.
In the early 1600s, the English Muscovy Company sent repeated voyages to Bear Island for sealing and walrus hunting. Mariners such as Jonas Poole gained experience with sea ice, coastal anchorages, and Arctic navigation. This practical knowledge helped English investors see the Arctic as a place for seasonal industry, not just exploration.
In 1610 Jonas Poole explored much of Spitsbergen’s west coast and reported seeing abundant whales. He also applied English names to several fjords and landmarks that became common reference points for mariners. His report helped push English backers toward organized whaling, including recruiting skilled Basque whalemen.
By 1611, the “Greenland whale fishery” began as bay (nearshore) whaling along Spitsbergen’s coast. Bay whaling relied on sheltered anchorages where crews could process blubber into oil nearby. This shift turned Spitsbergen’s waters into a seasonal industrial zone with growing international competition.
In 1613, the Muscovy Company received an English charter claiming monopoly rights for whaling at Spitsbergen. The claim leaned on an incorrect story that earlier English voyages had “discovered” the land. In practice, other nations continued to arrive, and the charter became a source of dispute rather than clear control.
By 1613–1615, English, Dutch, French, and Basque-linked voyages crowded the same harbors on Spitsbergen’s west coast. Competition was not only economic; it also led to seizures of goods, detentions, and confrontations over access to anchorages and whales. These conflicts show how quickly the fishery became international and contested.
On 27 January 1614, Dutch investors organized the Noordsche Compagnie to coordinate Arctic whaling and reduce internal competition. The company’s structure supported larger fleets, shared infrastructure, and concentrated capital. This helped the Dutch scale whaling at Spitsbergen and nearby waters such as Jan Mayen.
In summer 1614, separate expeditions verified Jan Mayen’s existence and began mapping and naming it. From 1615, the island became an important Dutch base for Arctic whaling operations. Jan Mayen expanded the geography of Northern European whaling beyond Spitsbergen’s bays and helped fleets spread risk across hunting grounds.
In 1619, Dutch and Danish interests helped found Smeerenburg on Amsterdam Island (northwest Spitsbergen) as a shore-based processing station. Shore stations let crews render blubber into oil on site, reducing cargo volume and supporting larger seasonal workforces. Smeerenburg became a symbol of industrialized Arctic whaling tied to European markets.
By the early 1620s, English operations at Spitsbergen featured organized fleets and veteran leaders such as William Goodlad. Fleet command mattered because whaling required coordinated boat crews, protection of shore facilities, and defense against rivals. This period reflects how whaling became a specialized maritime industry rather than occasional hunting.
The Noordsche Compagnie operated as a major Dutch whaling cartel until it dissolved in 1642. Its end did not stop Dutch whaling; instead it shifted competition and investment patterns among Dutch ports and merchants. This change helped set the stage for expansion and adaptation as nearshore whale numbers declined.
After about 1650, whalemen increasingly moved away from Spitsbergen’s bays and began hunting farther offshore, a model called pelagic whaling (open-water whaling). This change was driven by declining local stocks and the search for new bowhead whale concentrations. It also reduced the importance of large shore stations and increased reliance on shipboard processing and long-range navigation.
Smeerenburg’s last documented use was in 1657, and the site was abandoned around 1660 as offshore whaling and different processing practices took over. The closure marked a clear transition away from intensive, shore-based Arctic industry. It also reflects how rapid exploitation could change both the environment and the business model within a few decades.
By the second half of the 1600s, Dutch whaling expanded dramatically in fleet size and economic importance. Sources note rapid growth in the number of Dutch whaling ships during this period, even as catches began to decline when favored whales became rarer. This growth shows how capital, shipbuilding, and maritime labor shifted toward Arctic whaling despite rising ecological and operational limits.
By the end of the 1600s, English and Dutch operations had largely evolved from contested bay fisheries into broader offshore hunts across the Greenland Sea region. The most visible early shore-station phase at Spitsbergen had ended, while fleets, financing, and skilled labor remained central to Northern European maritime economies. This closing point marks the outcome of the 1596–1700 arc: a rapid shift from discovery to industrial exploitation and then to wider-ranging pelagic whaling.
