Barentsz’s expedition sights Spitsbergen
Labels: Willem Barentsz, Spitsbergen, Northeast PassageIn June 1596, Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz sighted land later known as Spitsbergen (Svalbard) while searching for a Northeast Passage. European reports of this Arctic archipelago helped put its coasts on navigation charts. These voyages laid the groundwork for later commercial voyages focused on walrus, whales, and trade.
