The Tang dynasty was founded after decades of conflict, restoring stronger central control across much of China. This stability supported population growth, large cities, and rising demand for foreign goods. It also helped expand trade networks by land and by sea, setting the stage for a more active Maritime Silk Road.
During the Tang period, Guangzhou (Canton) became a key port linking southern China to Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. Foreign merchants, including people from West and Central Asia, increasingly visited or settled in port cities where trade could be managed and taxed. These patterns helped make maritime routes an essential complement to overland Silk Road trade.
Under Emperor Xuanzong’s reign (the Kaiyuan era), Tang power and prosperity peaked, and maritime commerce expanded. Administrative attention to coastal regions and foreign merchants increased as ships and goods flowed through southern ports. The result was more regular, large-scale ocean trade that tied China closer to markets across Asia.
The An Lushan Rebellion shattered Tang finances and security, damaging many parts of the empire. Even when maritime trade continued, instability increased risks for merchants and made protection of trade routes harder. This upheaval reshaped how the Tang state and local powers controlled commerce afterward.
In 758, Arab and Persian forces attacked Guangzhou by sea, plundering and burning parts of the port area. Accounts connect the raid to tensions and vulnerabilities created by heavy trade, corruption, and limited coastal security. The event highlighted how valuable—and exposed—Tang maritime commerce had become.
In 760, troops under Tian Shengong killed large numbers of foreign merchants in Yangzhou, a major commercial city connected to the Grand Canal. The violence showed how quickly wealth and foreign identity could become dangerous in times of military unrest. It also helped push some long-distance trade activity toward locations and arrangements seen as easier to control.
In the later Tang period, Quanzhou in Fujian started developing into a major seaport and foreign-trade center. It increasingly rivaled Guangzhou and drew Persian and Arab settlers, reflecting shifting patterns in maritime commerce. This growth prepared the way for Quanzhou’s later prominence under the Song, but its roots lie in Tang-era expansion of coastal trade.
By the mid-to-late Tang, ceramics became a major mass export, especially suited to shipping in large quantities. Producers such as the Changsha kilns made huge numbers of bowls and other wares aimed at overseas markets. Rising demand along maritime routes connected Chinese workshops to consumers across Southeast Asia and the western Indian Ocean.
A 9th-century shipwreck near Belitung Island (Indonesia) carried tens of thousands of Tang ceramics and other goods, showing how large and organized maritime trade had become. Evidence from the cargo includes a Changsha bowl dated to 826, helping place the voyage in the early 9th century. The ship’s route illustrates how Chinese exports moved through Southeast Asia toward Indian Ocean markets.
Around the mid-9th century, Muslim merchants’ writings described voyages to India and China and noted Guangzhou as a major commercial port. These accounts highlight ongoing, routine connections between the Persian Gulf region and Tang China, including trade in high-value goods like porcelain. They also show how maritime commerce supported long-distance merchant communities with shared institutions and practices.
In 879, rebel leader Huang Chao took Guangzhou, one of Tang China’s richest trade cities. Reports from later sources describe large-scale killings and destruction that struck residents and especially foreign merchant communities. The shock weakened confidence in the port and disrupted the commercial links that had sustained parts of the Maritime Silk Road.
In 907 the Tang dynasty collapsed, and China entered the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Political fragmentation changed how ports were governed and how merchants managed risk, but sea trade did not vanish—it adapted to new regional powers. The Tang-era Maritime Silk Road left a lasting legacy: established routes, port communities, and export industries that later dynasties expanded.
