In the later Tang period, Quanzhou began developing into a major seaport and a center of foreign trade. Its position on Fujian’s coast and river routes helped connect inland producers with overseas shipping. This laid the foundation for Quanzhou’s later role as a key hub in maritime (sea-based) trade networks.
After the Song dynasty unified much of China (starting in 960), long-distance commerce expanded and coastal ports gained more state attention. Quanzhou benefited from this shift, as maritime routes offered alternatives when land routes were less stable. Over time, the city’s shipbuilding and commercial capacity increased alongside overseas trade.
The Qingjing Mosque was founded in 1009, showing that Muslim merchant communities were established in the port city early in the Song period. Religious sites like this also served practical roles, supporting community life for visiting and resident traders. The mosque remains a key piece of evidence for Quanzhou’s international connections.
In 1087, the Northern Song established a Maritime Trade Office (often translated as a maritime trade bureau) in Quanzhou to manage overseas commerce. This kind of office helped regulate shipping, collect taxes, and supervise foreign trade. The decision marks Quanzhou’s rise from a busy port to a major state-recognized trade center.
During the Song era, Quanzhou attracted merchants from across Asia, including many from Arab and Persian communities. The city developed multicultural neighborhoods and institutions that supported long-distance trade, such as warehouses, docks, and places of worship. This mix of people and infrastructure helped Quanzhou compete with other major ports.
In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, nearby Dehua became a major porcelain-producing area linked to Quanzhou’s maritime trade. Archaeological research shows extensive Song–Yuan kiln activity, indicating large-scale production. Export-oriented ceramics were part of the wider system connecting Quanzhou’s hinterland (inland supply areas) to overseas markets.
By the early 13th century, Quanzhou had surpassed Guangzhou in trade volume and became China’s biggest harbor in many accounts. Large resident foreign communities and high levels of ship traffic reflected its role in the broader “Maritime Silk Road” trade routes. This period represents Quanzhou’s peak as an international emporium (a major trade center).
In the mid-1200s, the powerful merchant-official Pu Shougeng served as Superintendent of Maritime Trade in Quanzhou. His career shows how trade administration, private wealth, and state power overlapped in a major port. Officials like Pu helped manage customs and shipping while benefiting from the flow of goods and taxes.
After the Yuan dynasty consolidated control over China, Quanzhou remained a leading port and was widely known abroad as “Zaytūn” (Zayton). Accounts by later travelers describe it as a place of heavy shipping activity and international trade. Under Yuan rule, Quanzhou’s emporium system continued to link production sites, transport routes, and overseas markets.
In 1345, the traveler Ibn Battuta reached Quanzhou, noting that Muslims called the city “Zaitun.” His observations highlight Quanzhou’s continuing importance in long-distance trade networks during the 14th century. Such accounts also show that foreign communities and international shipping were still visible in the port’s daily life.
From 1357 to 1366, the Ispah rebellion (a series of civil conflicts in Fujian) affected Quanzhou during the late Yuan period. Sources describe the rebellion as involving largely Muslim forces and ending with Yuan suppression. The violence and reprisals disrupted the port’s social order and damaged confidence in Quanzhou as a safe, stable base for international merchants.
Beginning in 1371, the early Ming state imposed strict controls on private overseas trade (often called the “sea ban”), shifting legal foreign commerce toward official tribute missions. Policies described in later summaries include major restrictions and closures of key ports, including Quanzhou, by the 1380s. Together with earlier late-Yuan turmoil, these measures marked a clear end to Quanzhou’s role as a leading international emporium by about 1370.
