After taking the throne, the Yongle Emperor made foreign relations a major priority. He used large state fleets to announce his rule abroad and to expand the Ming tributary system, in which overseas rulers sent envoys and gifts in return for trade access and political recognition.
In 1405, the court sent Zheng He as admiral of a massive fleet to the “Western Ocean” routes (South China Sea and Indian Ocean). The mission combined diplomacy, gift-giving, and maritime security, aiming to build stable relationships with key ports and rulers.
On the outward route, Zheng He’s fleet called at Malacca (Melaka), a strategic choke point near the Strait of Malacca. Ming recognition and contact helped strengthen Malacca’s position in regional trade and politics, making it a useful partner and resupply base for later voyages.
The first voyage reached Calicut (Kozhikode) on India’s Malabar Coast, one of the Indian Ocean’s major trading hubs. Contact with Calicut mattered because it linked the Ming court to the spice and textile networks that connected South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
During the return phase of the first voyage, Zheng He’s forces fought and defeated the pirate leader Chen Zuyi at Palembang (Sumatra). This action supported Ming diplomacy by making a critical sea lane safer for travel and commerce tied to Malacca and other ports.
On the second voyage, Ming envoys carried out a formal investiture (official recognition) of the Zamorin of Calicut. This kind of ceremony turned trade contact into a political relationship, linking Calicut more directly to the Ming tributary system.
Zheng He’s third voyage continued to build a repeating route through Southeast Asia, with Malacca functioning as a key stop for coordination and supply. Repeated visits helped standardize diplomacy and trade expectations along the route before pushing farther west on later voyages.
In the fourth voyage, the fleet moved beyond earlier limits and sent a detachment down the coast of Arabia to Dhofar and Aden. Aden mattered because it was a major gateway linking Indian Ocean shipping to Red Sea routes and wider West Asian trade networks.
The fourth voyage extended to East Africa, including ports in what is now Somalia, such as Mogadishu. These visits widened the diplomatic map of the Ming court and connected Chinese envoys with established Swahili Coast trading cities that handled gold, ivory, and other goods.
The fifth voyage focused heavily on managing relationships already created—especially returning foreign envoys and renewing contacts across the same sea lanes. By repeatedly showing up with gifts and official messages, the Ming court reinforced a predictable system of status and exchange.
In 1421, the sixth voyage again carried envoys home and revisited the established arc from Southeast Asia to East Africa. The voyage shows that the missions were not one-time explorations but repeated diplomatic circuits meant to keep overseas rulers tied to the Ming court.
When the Yongle Emperor died, court priorities changed and long-distance naval expeditions were suspended. Zheng He was reassigned to duties in Nanjing, signaling that the state’s focus was moving away from expensive overseas display diplomacy.
In 1431, the Ming court restarted the program for a final expedition under Zheng He. The fleet revisited key hubs, including Calicut, and again reached West Asian and East African ports, aiming to reaffirm ties built over decades.
Zheng He died in 1433 while the fleet was returning from the seventh voyage, reported in Calicut (Kozhikode). After the fleet returned to China, the great state-sponsored voyages stopped, marking the end of this phase of Ming maritime diplomacy linking Malacca, Calicut, Aden, and Mogadishu.
