Around 800 BCE, many Greek communities expanded seaborne trade and settlement beyond the Aegean. This wider movement created the conditions for voyages through the Bosporus into the Black Sea, where new ports could link Greek merchants to inland producers. The Black Sea phase became one of the most important parts of Archaic Greek overseas expansion.
In the mid-7th century BCE, Greek settlers established a colony on Berezan Island near the Dnieper–Bug estuary. It functioned as a coastal trading post (an emporion) that connected Greek ships with exchange networks reaching inland. Its later decline helped shift activity to larger mainland cities nearby.
In the 7th century BCE, Milesian settlers founded Olbia near the Southern Bug estuary, building on earlier coastal activity in the area. The city developed into a major market for exporting grain, fish, and enslaved people and importing Greek manufactured goods. Olbia’s growth shows how colonization and commerce reinforced each other along river-linked corridors.
Milesian settlers founded Histria (Istros) on the western Black Sea coast in the 7th century BCE, often dated to around 630 BCE in ancient chronographic traditions. The site shows how colonists chose river mouths and lagoons that could gather trade from the interior. Histria helped anchor a chain of Greek communities along the western Pontic shore.
Sinope, a Milesian foundation on the north Anatolian coast, grew into one of the most important Greek cities in the southern Black Sea. Its good harbor and strategic position helped it act as a launching point for further coastal links and trade routes. By the Hellenistic period, its importance was great enough that it became a prize for regional kingdoms.
Around 610 BCE, Milesian colonists founded Apollonia Pontica (at modern Sozopol) on a sheltered harbor of the western Black Sea. The city became a maritime hub for exchanging Greek goods with Thracian communities inland, including metals and other resources. Its location shows a recurring pattern: colonies clustered at safe anchorages with access to inland routes.
By about 600/575 BCE, settlers from Miletus founded Odessos (modern Varna) at a well-placed bay and lake outlet. Archaeology and later inscriptions point to a long-lived port community with strong trading links across the Greek world and into Thrace. Odessos illustrates how Milesian networks reinforced Greek presence along the western Black Sea.
By about 600 BCE, Milesian colonists founded Panticapaeum (near modern Kerch) at the narrow strait linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Control of this chokepoint supported trade in grain, fish, and other goods from the northern steppe and coastal regions. The city’s position later made it a natural capital for regional state formation.
Between about 560 and 558 BCE, colonists from Megara founded Heraclea Pontica on the southern Black Sea coast in Bithynia. It became both a trading center and a base for further settlement, showing that not only Ionians but also Dorian-founded cities joined Black Sea expansion. Over time, Heraclea would sponsor colonies of its own, including in the Crimea.
By about 438 BCE, Greek cities around the Cimmerian Bosporus coalesced into the Bosporan Kingdom, ruled from Panticapaeum. This marked a shift from scattered independent poleis to a larger, more centralized political structure that could manage trade, diplomacy, and security. The kingdom’s mixed Greco-local character became a defining feature of the region.
In the 5th century BCE, Chersonesus in southwestern Crimea was refounded by Megarian Greeks from Heraclea Pontica, creating a Dorian-style city after an earlier Ionian phase. Its later prosperity depended on controlling farmland and negotiating conflict with nearby Scythians and other groups. The refoundation shows how Black Sea colonization was an ongoing process, not a single wave.
In the 4th century BCE, Bosporan rulers expanded control over additional ports and farmland, strengthening a regional economy that could supply large quantities of grain. These exports linked the northern Black Sea more tightly to Greek markets, including cities that depended on imported food. The result was a more integrated Pontic trade network with stronger state involvement.
In 183 BCE, the Kingdom of Pontus annexed Sinope and made it its capital, signaling a major change in the balance of power on the southern Black Sea coast. This tied key Greek coastal cities more directly to a territorial monarchy rather than to independent city-state politics. The annexation also helped Pontus project influence along Black Sea trade routes.
In 107–106 BCE, amid pressure from Scythian forces and internal instability, the Bosporan Kingdom fell under the control of Mithridates VI of Pontus. This event effectively ended the long Spartocid era and connected much of the northern Black Sea coast to Pontic royal strategy. It marks a clear transition from the earlier colonization world of independent poleis to a landscape dominated by Hellenistic-era kingdoms.
