Archaeological evidence indicates Phoenician traders established a foothold at Huelva in the 9th century BCE, creating a “Phoenician quarter” (a residential and commercial area). This Atlantic-facing port helped link seaborne traders to inland routes that carried metals from the southwest Iberian mining districts.
In the late 9th century BCE, Phoenicians established an early colony-type settlement at Gadir (modern Cádiz). Its position near the Strait of Gibraltar made it a practical stop for ships and a hub for trade with communities in southwest Iberia commonly associated with Tartessos.
Later tradition dated Carthage’s founding by settlers from Tyre to 814 BCE, though archaeology suggests substantial remains begin later (late 8th century BCE). Whether or not the traditional date is exact, Carthage became an increasingly important western Phoenician center that affected trade organization across the western Mediterranean, including Iberia.
A Phoenician settlement formed at Cerro del Villar near present-day Málaga, on an island-like position in the Guadalhorce River estuary. Sites like this expanded the coastline network of harbors and warehouses that supported regular voyages and exchange with local Iberian communities.

Ancient tradition places the rule of King Argantonios in the 7th–6th centuries BCE, a period often associated with Tartessos’ prominence. This era is commonly treated as the high point of the Tartessian world that Phoenician traders engaged with through ports such as Gadir and Huelva.
By the 6th century BCE, Tartessos as a distinct culture is generally considered to have ended, and earlier patterns of exchange were reshaped. The outcome was not a sudden stop to contact, but a transition: older Phoenician–Tartessian partnerships gave way to new political and economic structures in southern Iberia.
Around the mid-6th century BCE (often cited near 550 BCE), the main settlement at Los Toscanos was abandoned, with activity moving to nearby locations. This change is commonly discussed alongside broader shifts toward stronger Carthaginian influence over Phoenician diaspora settlements and reorganization of coastal trade nodes.
Between about 540 and 535 BCE, Carthaginians and Etruscans fought the Phocaean Greeks off Corsica in the Battle of Alalia. The struggle reflected competition over sea routes and trading access in the western Mediterranean, conditions that also influenced Phoenician-linked commerce with Iberia.
