Sediment cores from Sidon’s coast show that, by the early first millennium BCE, the city used nearby pocket beaches as “proto-harbours” (natural landing places) that supported coastal trade. As maritime exchange grew, these natural anchorages began to be modified to handle larger volumes and different types of ships.
Geoarchaeological research indicates that the sheltered waters behind Zire island were exploited as a deep-water anchorage, functioning as an “outer harbour.” This let larger ships wait offshore while cargo and people moved to and from the main shoreline in smaller boats, reducing risk in rougher seas.
In the late 8th–early 7th centuries BCE, Neo-Assyrian expansion brought repeated military and political pressure to the Phoenician coast. Regional revolts and Assyrian responses created instability that could affect port labor, taxation, and the security of shipping routes.
Beginning in the 7th century BCE and expanding under later rulers, the Temple of Eshmun complex near Sidon shows large-scale construction and water installations (such as cisterns and channels). These projects point to organized labor and engineering capacity in the Sidon region—skills and institutions that also supported harbor upkeep and coastal works.
After Sidon’s king rebelled, the Assyrian king Esarhaddon captured the city in 677 BCE and rebuilt it under Assyrian authority. The rebuilding is described as creating a new, Assyrian-controlled “harbour” city, showing how port infrastructure and administration could be reshaped by imperial rule.
Archaeological syntheses describe substantial harbour works around Zire—such as seawalls, a quay, and mooring features—integrating the island into Sidon’s wider port system. These investments suggest a move from simple anchorage to purpose-built coastal infrastructure that supported frequent loading and unloading.
Under the Achaemenid Persian Empire, Sidon developed into one of the major ports supporting Persian naval power in the eastern Mediterranean. Its strategic role would have increased demand for ship repair, provisioning, and harbor management, tying local maritime work to imperial needs.
After the Persian conquest of Egypt, Egyptian-style stone sarcophagi later used for Sidonian royalty appear to have been taken from Egypt and brought to Sidon. While these objects are funerary, they also reflect Sidon’s close maritime connections with Egypt and its ability to transport very heavy cargo by sea.
Sidonian silver coinage from the Persian period commonly depicts a war galley alongside city walls and towers. This imagery signals how central maritime activity and defended coastal infrastructure were to Sidon’s identity and economy during the 5th–4th centuries BCE.
Sidon remained a major coastal city into the later 4th century BCE, but its political setting changed as Persian control weakened and new rulers emerged in the eastern Mediterranean. The destruction and subsequent transitions reshaped how Sidon’s harbor and shipbuilding activity fit into wider empires, marking the end of the period of relatively stable Achaemenid-era port development.
In the mid-4th century BCE, King Abdashtart I (Straton I) is associated by modern scholarship with economic and political difficulty, including changes to precious-metal coin standards. For a port city, such monetary stress could reflect shifting trade conditions, tribute demands, or disruptions in maritime commerce.
During a major revolt against Persian rule, Artaxerxes III moved against Phoenician cities, and Sidon suffered a catastrophic destruction event. Accounts describe the city being burned with large loss of life, a turning point that would have damaged port facilities, shipyards, warehouses, and the workforce that sustained maritime trade.
