Wooden writing tablets from Vindolanda (a fort just south of the wall line) preserve letters and records from the late 1st to early 2nd centuries CE. They reveal daily concerns such as supplies, work details, and social life, including messages between officers’ families. This evidence helps historians describe frontier life beyond battles and building projects.
In 122 CE, Emperor Hadrian visited Roman Britain and ordered a permanent frontier barrier across northern England. The goal was to control movement, support defense, and mark the edge of Roman power in the province. This decision set the direction for a long-lived frontier system with roads, forts, and border administration.
Work started in 122 CE on a continuous wall planned for 80 Roman miles (about 117 km) from the Tyne to the Solway. The original design included small fortlets called milecastles at regular intervals, with pairs of turrets between them for observation and signaling. These features created a closely spaced chain of guarded crossing-points and watch posts.
During construction, Roman planners decided to add large forts directly on the wall line, not just smaller milecastles and turrets. This shift concentrated larger units at key points and increased controlled gateways through the frontier. The change also reshaped how soldiers and supplies moved and where frontier communities developed.
By about 124 CE, forts such as Housesteads (Vercovicium) were built in stone as part of the updated plan. Forts housed larger garrisons than milecastles and supported long-term occupation, patrols, and logistics. Around these forts, civilian settlements (vici) often grew, linking military life with trade and local services.
Most of the main frontier works were finished by around 128 CE, after several adjustments to design and placement. The completed system combined the curtain wall, ditches, milecastles, turrets, and a network of forts and roads. This created a frontier meant to be staffed long-term rather than a short emergency fortification.
A few years after the wall, the Romans built the Vallum: a large ditch-and-mound earthwork running just south of the wall for much of its length. Current scholarship generally treats it as marking the southern boundary of a controlled military zone, helping manage access and movement behind the frontier. Together, the wall, forts, and Vallum created a layered border landscape.
After Hadrian’s death, Rome shifted the frontier north and built the Antonine Wall beginning around 142 CE. This reduced the central role of Hadrian’s Wall for about two decades, though the south remained an important military zone. The change shows that the frontier line could move based on imperial strategy and political needs.
By the 160s CE, the Antonine Wall was abandoned and the Roman army returned to the Hadrian’s Wall line as the main frontier. Reoccupation required repairs and rebuilding in places, especially where materials had been removed during the northern shift. This return reinforced Hadrian’s Wall as the lasting border system for most of Roman Britain’s remaining history.
In 208–211 CE, Emperor Septimius Severus led a major campaign in northern Britain and into Scotland. Although this was not a permanent conquest, it highlights renewed conflict and heavy military activity in the north. Hadrian’s Wall remained the key base line for troops and supply as Rome managed the frontier after the campaign.
By the late 4th century, the Notitia Dignitatum lists a frontier commander (dux Britanniarum) with units stationed in northern England, including along the line of Hadrian’s Wall. This document suggests that the wall still mattered as an organized military zone late in Roman rule. It also reflects how frontier defense became more about distributed garrisons than large conquest armies.
By 410 CE, Roman administration and field armies had effectively left Britain, ending centralized Roman rule. Without imperial funding and command, frontier forts and the wall system could no longer be maintained at the same scale. Hadrian’s Wall entered a new phase as a landscape of ruins, reused stone, and local memory rather than an active Roman border.
