In 105 CE, Emperor Trajan launched a second campaign against the Dacian kingdom after earlier fighting and a short-lived peace. The war aimed to end Dacia’s ability to threaten Rome’s Danube frontier and to bring the region under direct Roman control.
After Trajan’s victory in 106 CE, core Dacian territory was annexed and organized as the imperial province of Dacia. This created a major new Roman frontier province north of the Danube, which required permanent troops, roads, and a new administrative system.
Soon after the conquest, Rome founded Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa as a veteran colony and the province’s main administrative center. Establishing a colonia (a high-status Roman city) helped anchor Roman law, taxation, and urban life in the new province.
To hold the new province, Rome stationed major forces in Dacia, including Legio XIII Gemina at Apulum. A permanent legionary base supported border security, enforced Roman authority, and helped drive settlement and economic activity around military sites.
Under Hadrian, Dacia was reorganized to improve control and defense. The province was divided into Dacia Superior and Dacia Inferior, reflecting different military needs and administrative responsibilities across the territory.
By the early 120s CE, Rome created Dacia Porolissensis from the northern part of Dacia Superior. This change strengthened frontier administration by giving the northern sector its own governing and fiscal oversight, aligned with the realities of border defense.
Porolissum began as a military foundation and grew into a major frontier center. By 124 CE it served as the capital of Dacia Porolissensis, showing how Rome paired forts, roads, and towns to manage border regions and supervise movement across the frontier.
Around 158 CE, the seat of the provincial governor moved from Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa to Apulum. This shift reflected Apulum’s growing importance as a military and administrative hub, closely tied to the legionary base and key roads.
In 166 CE, mounting pressure on the Danube frontier led Marcus Aurelius to merge Dacia’s provinces under a unified higher command called Tres Daciae (“Three Dacias”). The provinces continued to exist, but the new structure aimed to coordinate defense and administration more effectively during wartime.
Across the 2nd–3rd centuries, Rome built and adjusted an extensive frontier network in Dacia, with multiple sectors integrated into a single border system. Forts, roads, watchtowers, and river defenses formed the “limes” (frontier zone) that supported both military response and day-to-day border control.
During the mid-3rd century crisis, attacks and raids along the Danube increased, including campaigns involving groups such as the Carpi and Gothic forces in the wider region. These pressures strained Dacia’s defenses and made the province harder to supply and hold, even with fortifications and troops in place.
Around 270–275 CE, Emperor Aurelian withdrew Roman troops and the civilian administration from Dacia, effectively ending the province north of the Danube. The withdrawal recognized that Dacia could no longer be defended at acceptable cost during a period of repeated invasions and imperial instability.
After the evacuation, Aurelian established Dacia Aureliana south of the Danube, with its capital at Serdica (modern Sofia). This reorganization preserved the name “Dacia” inside the empire and provided a more defensible administrative base tied to the Danube frontier.
