In 89 CE, Emperor Domitian ended earlier fighting with King Decebalus by making peace. Rome effectively treated Dacia as an overlordship but also supported Decebalus with subsidies and technical help, leaving a powerful kingdom on the Danube frontier. This settlement set the stage for Trajan’s later decision to settle the problem by conquest.
Trajan became Roman emperor in 98 CE and made the Danube frontier a priority. Dacia’s strength and its position north of the river made it a continuing strategic concern for Rome. Planning and preparation along the frontier helped enable the major campaigns that followed.
In 101 CE, Trajan led a large Roman invasion into Dacia, beginning the First Dacian War. The goal was to reduce the threat from Decebalus and secure Rome’s border provinces along the Danube. The invasion quickly turned into hard fighting in difficult terrain.
In September 101 CE, Roman forces defeated the Dacians at the Third Battle of Tapae, a key pass into the Dacian interior. The battle mattered because it helped Trajan push beyond the frontier zone and threaten the Dacian heartland. However, the war did not end quickly, and further operations continued into the next year.
In the winter of 101–102 CE, major fighting took place near Adamclisi in the lower Danube region. The clash showed that the war involved not only Dacians but also allied groups and could spread far from the main invasion route. Rome ultimately presented the battle as part of its wider victory narrative in the region.
In 102 CE, after renewed Roman pressure toward the Dacian capital area, Decebalus sought terms. The settlement reduced Dacia’s freedom of action and allowed Roman occupation garrisons, aiming to keep Decebalus under tighter control. The peace was unstable and functioned more like a pause than a final settlement.
After the first war, Rome invested in infrastructure to support renewed campaigning. Construction began in 103 CE on the bridge later known as Trajan’s Bridge at Drobeta, designed to secure fast movement of troops and supplies across the Danube. This was a strategic shift from temporary crossings to a durable invasion route.
By 105 CE, the post-102 settlement had collapsed, and fighting resumed in what is known as the Second Dacian War. Sources describe Decebalus as turning against Rome and attacking Roman forces, pushing the conflict back into open warfare. With the bridge and frontier works in place, Trajan could respond with a major new offensive.
Trajan’s Bridge was completed in 105 CE, creating a reliable crossing over the lower Danube. The bridge strengthened Rome’s supply lines and made it easier to bring large forces into Dacia quickly. Its completion reflects how engineering and logistics were central to Rome’s frontier expansion.
In 106 CE, Roman forces captured Sarmizegetusa, the Dacian capital, for a second time. After defeat, Decebalus took his own life rather than be captured. This ended organized resistance at the top and cleared the way for direct Roman rule.
Following the victory in 106 CE, Rome annexed Dacia and organized it as a province. This changed the Danube frontier by pushing Roman power north of the river and placing garrisons and administration in the conquered territory. The annexation also tied the region more tightly into Roman military and economic systems.
Around 109 CE, a large victory monument known as the Tropaeum Traiani was built near Adamclisi. It commemorated Trajan’s success in the Dacian Wars and also served as a lasting statement of Roman power in the region. By placing a monument near a major battlefield area, Rome linked conquest to public memory and warning.
On May 12, 113 CE, Trajan’s Column was inaugurated in Rome as part of Trajan’s Forum. Its spiral reliefs depict the Dacian campaigns and helped shape how Romans remembered the wars. The column became a long-lasting visual record of frontier expansion and the cost of conquest.
