The plot was carried out by officers of Japan’s Kwantung Army, reflecting Japan’s growing willingness to use covert violence to shape politics in Manchuria. The assassination failed to produce a stable, pro-Japanese successor, but it foreshadowed later escalation.
A small explosion occurred on the Japanese-owned South Manchuria Railway near Mukden (Shenyang), and Japanese forces blamed Chinese actors. The incident became the pretext for a rapid military expansion by Japan’s Kwantung Army across Manchuria. It marked the start of Japanese-controlled Manchuria and a major international crisis.
Manchukuo was formally established as a new state under Japanese control, presenting Japan’s occupation as local “independence” rather than conquest. In practice, Japanese military and officials dominated key decisions, while the new regime sought international recognition. This step turned a military occupation into a state-building project meant to legitimize Japan’s hold on Manchuria.
Japan and Manchukuo signed a protocol confirming Japan’s recognition of Manchukuo. China and Japan signed the Tanggu Truce, ending major fighting connected to Japan’s initial seizure of Manchuria. The agreement created limits on Chinese troop deployments near the Great Wall and helped stabilize Japan’s new border conditions. It effectively gave Japan time and space to strengthen Manchukuo and shift pressure toward North China.
Puyi, the last Qing emperor, was crowned as the Kangde Emperor of Manchukuo, shifting the regime’s image from a republic to a monarchy. The ceremony aimed to strengthen the state’s legitimacy, but real authority still rested largely with Japan’s Kwantung Army and advisers. The event illustrates how symbolism and governance were used together to sustain Japanese rule.
Japan’s Army created Unit 731 in Manchukuo, a secret program based near Harbin focused on biological warfare research. It became notorious for lethal human experimentation and the development and testing of biological agents. The unit shows how Manchukuo functioned not only as a colony and industrial base, but also as a site for extreme militarized research.
Major fighting broke out along the Mongolia–Manchukuo border between Japanese and Soviet-Mongolian forces, culminating in Japan’s defeat. The outcome reinforced the risks of further expansion toward the Soviet Union and influenced Japanese strategic thinking. It also increased the importance of Manchuria as a heavily militarized frontier zone.
Japan and the Soviet Union signed a neutrality pact, pledging to respect each other’s territorial integrity and remain neutral if the other was attacked by a third power. For Japan, this reduced immediate pressure on Manchukuo’s northern border during much of World War II. The pact later unraveled as the war turned against Japan.
The Soviet Union declared war on Japan and began a large-scale invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria the next day. The offensive rapidly overwhelmed Japanese forces and made Manchukuo’s continued existence impossible. Puyi attempted to flee but was captured, and Japanese control in Manchuria effectively ended.
Japan signed its surrender, ending World War II in Asia and closing the chapter on Japan’s empire-building in Manchuria. Manchukuo, which depended on Japanese military power, could not continue and ceased to exist as a political project. The region then became a key contested area in postwar Chinese and Soviet-influenced politics.
