King Manuel I appointed Francisco de Almeida as the first viceroy to govern Portugal’s expanding interests in the Indian Ocean. This marked a shift from ad-hoc trading outposts toward a more formal colonial administration that would later be known as the Estado da Índia.
A major Portuguese naval victory at Diu helped Portugal secure its position on key sea routes in the Indian Ocean. With sea power, the Portuguese were better able to protect their forts, pressure coastal rulers, and steer long-distance trade through their controlled ports.
Afonso de Albuquerque captured Goa in 1510, creating a strong territorial base rather than just a coastal factory (trading post). Goa soon became the central headquarters for Portuguese rule and shipping in the region, helping tie together a network of forts and ports across the Indian Ocean.
Portugal and the Sultanate of Gujarat signed the Treaty of Bassein, granting Portugal control of Bassein (Vasai) and associated islands. This strengthened Portuguese influence along India’s west coast and supported a chain of coastal strongholds linked to Goa.
A combined Ottoman and Gujarati force attempted to capture Diu, a strategically placed Portuguese-held port and fortress. The Portuguese defense succeeded, showing how fortifications and naval supply lines were central to the survival of the Estado da Índia against larger regional powers.
A renewed siege of Diu lasted through much of the monsoon season, when sea reinforcements were difficult. Portuguese relief forces eventually arrived and the siege was lifted, keeping Diu in Portuguese hands and reinforcing the importance of sea-based logistics for the empire.
Portugal established the Goa Inquisition to enforce Catholic orthodoxy among Christians and converts, and it also worked to suppress some local religious practices. Its presence shaped social life in Goa for centuries and became one of the most controversial institutions of Portuguese rule in India.
When Portugal and Spain were united under one crown, Portuguese territories were pulled into wider European conflicts. In Asia, this made Portuguese positions more vulnerable to attacks by Dutch and English rivals, who were also fighting Spanish power.
Dutch campaigns along the Malabar Coast took several Portuguese-controlled or Portuguese-influenced positions, breaking up parts of Portugal’s coastal system. Losses like these reduced the Estado da Índia from a broad trading network to a smaller set of remaining enclaves centered on Goa.
After long operation (with interruptions), the Goa Inquisition ended in 1812. Its closure reflected wider political and legal changes in the Portuguese world and reduced one of the most intrusive tools of religious control in Portuguese India.
In December 1961, Indian forces ended Portuguese rule in Goa, Daman, and Diu, bringing centuries of colonial administration to a close. This action dissolved the last major Portuguese territories in India and began a transition to Indian civil governance.
India’s Twelfth Amendment incorporated Goa, Daman, and Diu into India’s constitutional framework as a union territory. This step formalized the administrative transition after the 1961 takeover and clarified how the territory would be governed under Indian law.
After political change in Portugal, the two countries moved toward normalization and Portugal formally recognized India’s sovereignty over Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra, and Nagar Haveli. This diplomatic step closed a long dispute over the end of the Estado da Índia and enabled restored relations.
