English captain John Powell reached Barbados and claimed the island for England. This voyage helped set up England’s later push to create a permanent colony and plantation economy on the island.
A group led by Henry Powell established the first lasting English settlement near present-day Holetown (then called Jamestown). Early production relied heavily on indentured labor, and the colony soon began importing enslaved people as plantation agriculture expanded.
English settlers established a new settlement that became Bridgetown, which grew into the island’s main port and commercial center. Its harbor and warehouses later supported the rapid scaling of sugar production and Atlantic trade links.
The island’s elected House of Assembly held its first meeting, becoming one of the earliest legislatures in the Americas. This strengthened local planter influence over taxation, labor rules, and policing—key issues in a growing plantation society.
During the 1640s, falling tobacco prices pushed many planters to shift toward sugar. Know-how and equipment for large-scale sugar making were strongly influenced by Dutch experience in Brazil, helping Barbados become a major sugar-exporting colony.
During the English Civil Wars, Barbados backed the royalist cause and resisted Parliament. Admiral George Ayscue blockaded the island and forced a negotiated surrender, tying Barbados more firmly to England’s changing state power and trade rules.
As sugar profits grew, plantations consolidated land and demanded far more labor than earlier small farms. The colony increasingly shifted from white indentured servitude to racialized chattel slavery, reshaping Barbados’s population and social order.
The Barbadian legislature passed “An Act for the better ordering and governing of Negroes,” often called the Barbados Slave Code. It helped formalize slavery in law and treated enslaved Africans as property, influencing slave laws elsewhere in the English Atlantic.
By the late 1600s, Barbados was widely organized around large sugar estates, export shipping, and enslaved labor. Wealth and political power concentrated among plantation owners, while harsh labor conditions and tight surveillance aimed to prevent resistance.
A major uprising of enslaved people began in the parish of St. Philip and spread to other parts of the island. It was suppressed by militia and troops, but it showed organized resistance and helped intensify pressure for anti-slavery reforms in Britain’s Caribbean colonies.
Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act, setting a timetable to end slavery across most of the British Empire. The law also created an “apprenticeship” transition system and provided compensation to slave owners rather than to the formerly enslaved.
The Slavery Abolition Act took effect, and most enslaved people were reclassified as “apprentices,” still required to work for former owners for set hours. In practice, this extended coercive labor and kept plantation production running while Britain managed the transition.
Barbados passed a law to end the apprenticeship of praedial (field) laborers on 1 August 1838, before the longer end date originally planned in imperial policy. The change reflected strong criticism that apprenticeship functioned like forced labor under a new name.
On this date, apprenticeship ended and formerly enslaved Barbadians became legally free. The sugar economy continued, but the labor system shifted toward wage work and new forms of control over land, housing, and employment—shaping Barbados’s post-slavery society.
