In May 1607, English colonists backed by the Virginia Company founded Jamestown in present-day Virginia. It became the first permanent English settlement in mainland North America. The colony began as a risky business venture, and survival depended on supplies, leadership, and relations with nearby Native nations.
In late 1608, Captain John Smith took a central role in governing Jamestown during a crisis of food shortages and disorder. His leadership emphasized strict work rules and trade for food, which helped the settlement survive. Even so, Jamestown remained fragile and dependent on outside support.
During the winter of 1609–1610, Jamestown suffered extreme famine, disease, and breakdown of order. This period, often called the “Starving Time,” killed a large share of the settlers and nearly ended the colony. Relief ships and new arrivals in 1610 helped the settlement continue.
By 1612, colonist John Rolfe developed tobacco that sold well in English markets. Tobacco exports soon reshaped Virginia’s economy and land use, encouraging plantations and expansion along rivers. This growth increased pressure on Native lands and changed the colony’s labor needs.
In April 1614, Pocahontas (also known as Rebecca after her baptism) married John Rolfe. The marriage helped create a temporary period of reduced conflict between the English and the Powhatan Confederacy. This uneasy peace did not resolve deeper disputes over land and power.
On July 30, 1619, Governor George Yeardley convened the General Assembly at Jamestown, including elected representatives later known as the House of Burgesses. This is widely recognized as a major early step toward representative government in English North America. It also tied local lawmaking to the colony’s expanding economy and settlement.
In late August 1619, “twenty and odd” captive Africans arrived at Point Comfort (near today’s Fort Monroe). They were traded to English colonists for supplies, and some were taken into the colony’s labor system. Over the 1600s, Virginia’s labor system moved toward hereditary, race-based slavery.
On March 22, 1622, Powhatan forces launched a coordinated attack that killed hundreds of English settlers across the colony. The assault shocked English leaders and intensified a cycle of raids and reprisals. It marked a major turning point toward more violent and expansionist English policies in Virginia.
In 1624, the English Crown changed Virginia’s status from a company-run venture to a royal colony. This followed years of conflict, high mortality, and political disputes involving the Virginia Company. The shift increased royal control over the colony’s leadership while the local assembly continued to develop.
In March 1644, Powhatan leader Opechancanough launched another major attack on English settlements, starting the Third Anglo-Powhatan War. The war reflected rising tensions as English tobacco farming and settlements expanded. By 1646, English forces captured Opechancanough and imposed harsh terms on Powhatan communities.
In 1676, frontier fighting, political grievances, and conflicts over Native policy helped spark Bacon’s Rebellion against Governor William Berkeley. During the rebellion, Jamestown was burned on September 19, damaging the colonial capital and exposing deep divisions among colonists. The rebellion ultimately failed, but it influenced later policies on labor, land, and control.
In May 1677, the Treaty of Middle Plantation (also known as the Treaty of 1677) was signed between the English Crown and representatives of several Virginia tribes. The treaty established a “tributary” relationship that required annual payments and affirmed English authority while also recognizing certain Native lands and rights in limited ways. It marked a new phase of colonial control after Bacon’s Rebellion.
After a major fire in the Jamestown statehouse complex, Virginia’s leaders chose to relocate the capital. In 1699, Williamsburg (at Middle Plantation) became the colony’s new capital, and the assembly began meeting there. This shift reflected Jamestown’s decline and the colony’s continued growth inland.
In 1705, Virginia’s legislature passed “An Act concerning Servants and Slaves,” a wide-ranging law that strengthened and clarified slavery in the colony. The act tied bondage to non-Christian origins and set rules that increased slaveholders’ control. These legal changes helped make racial slavery central to Virginia’s economy and society.
On May 28, 1754, Virginians led by George Washington fought French forces at the Battle of Jumonville Glen in the Ohio Valley. The clash helped trigger the French and Indian War, part of the global Seven Years’ War. The war increased Britain’s costs and later contributed to new colonial taxes that many Virginians resisted.
In May 1765, the House of Burgesses adopted resolutions associated with Patrick Henry opposing the Stamp Act. The resolves argued that Virginians should be taxed only by their own representatives, sharpening the “no taxation without representation” conflict. This helped connect Virginia politics to a wider movement of colonial resistance.
On June 12, 1776, Virginia adopted the Virginia Declaration of Rights, largely drafted by George Mason. It stated that government rests on the people and that individuals have fundamental rights. The document influenced other state declarations and helped shape later American constitutional ideas.
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, publicly announcing separation from Great Britain. Virginia leaders and institutions that had grown from Jamestown-era company rule and royal government were now part of a new national project. The shift ended Virginia’s colonial status and began a new phase of war and state-building as an independent polity.
