The States-General of the Dutch Republic granted the Dutch West India Company (WIC) a charter and trade monopoly for Dutch activity in the Atlantic world. The WIC was designed to combine commerce with military pressure against Spanish and Portuguese power. This created the institutional base for later WIC campaigns and settlements in the Caribbean.
A WIC-backed Dutch fleet captured a major Spanish treasure convoy in the Bay of Matanzas, near Cuba. The captured silver and goods boosted the company’s finances and prestige. This success encouraged the WIC to keep using armed force to support its Atlantic trading strategy.
The WIC seized Curaçao from Spain and quickly began building a fortified base. Curaçao’s natural harbor made it useful for naval operations, regional trade, and later as a distribution point in wider Atlantic networks. This capture marks the start of long-term WIC rule in what became the Dutch Antilles core.
The WIC took possession of Sint Eustatius, reported at the time to be uninhabited, and began fortifying it. Fort Oranje was built to protect the anchorage and commercial traffic. Over time, Sint Eustatius became an important node for inter-island trade and transshipment across rival empires.
After Curaçao was secured, Bonaire came under WIC administration. The island was developed mainly for production and supply, especially salt, which was valuable for preserving food and supporting maritime trade. This linked Bonaire’s economy closely to Curaçao and WIC regional needs.
The WIC took Aruba and administered it as a dependency of Curaçao. Control of nearby islands helped the WIC defend its new Caribbean base and expand regional shipping routes. Aruba’s occupation shows how the company built a small island network rather than a single isolated outpost.
After years of conflict and shifting control, France and the Dutch Republic agreed to partition the island of Saint Martin. The treaty created a long-lasting divided island, with a Dutch southern portion and a French northern portion. For WIC operations, this reduced direct conflict costs while keeping a foothold in the northeastern Caribbean.
The WIC gained asiento subcontracts that allowed it to supply enslaved Africans into Spanish America, and Curaçao became a key transfer port. Enslaved people were brought from West Africa to Curaçao and then sold onward within the wider Caribbean and Spanish colonies. This shift tied WIC Caribbean operations closely to the Atlantic slave trade and to Spanish colonial demand.
The first WIC collapsed financially and was dissolved in 1674. A second WIC was chartered the same year, taking over major assets and continuing Atlantic trade and colonial administration under a reorganized structure. This continuity mattered in the Caribbean because Curaçao and the smaller islands remained tied to company governance for more than a century longer.
Fort Oranje on Sint Eustatius returned a cannon salute to the American vessel Andrew Doria. This act became known as the “First Salute” and is often described as an early foreign recognition of the United States. It also highlighted Sint Eustatius’s role as a trading hub whose commerce and neutrality could pull the Dutch Caribbean into larger international conflicts.
British forces under Admiral George Rodney captured Sint Eustatius, forcing a surrender by the island’s governor. The seizure targeted a major entrepôt (a transshipment trading center) and disrupted Dutch commercial networks across the Caribbean. The event showed how vulnerable WIC island operations were when European wars expanded into the region.
By 1791 the WIC was dissolved, and its remaining colonies and possessions were taken over by the Dutch state rather than run as a chartered company. This marked the end of the WIC era in the Caribbean and Dutch Antilles, after more than 150 years of company-driven warfare, trade, and administration. The change also reflected a broader shift toward direct state control of overseas territories.
