French settlers led by Jean du Plessis d’Ossonville and Charles Liénard de l’Olive landed at Pointe-Allègre (near today’s Sainte-Rose) and claimed Guadeloupe for France. This marked the start of permanent French colonial rule on the island and the beginning of major changes in land use, labor, and governance. Early forts and settlements were established to secure the colony.

The sudden leadership change mattered because the settlement was still fragile and depended heavily on centralized decisions about defense, supplies, and relations with local communities. This helped push Guadeloupe toward a more militarized and plantation-focused colony.
British forces invaded and captured Guadeloupe during the Seven Years’ War, beginning a period of British occupation. Control of the island was valuable because its sugar economy and trade routes were highly profitable. The occupation also showed how European wars could directly reshape Caribbean colonies.
The Treaty of Paris ending the Seven Years’ War required Britain to restore Guadeloupe to France. This restored French administration and confirmed that, for France, the island’s plantation economy was important enough to regain even while France lost large territories elsewhere. The treaty set the stage for France to rebuild colonial governance on Guadeloupe.
During the French Revolution, the National Convention decreed the abolition of slavery across the French colonies. In practice, enforcement varied by colony and wartime conditions, but the decree created a new legal and political framework for Guadeloupe. It linked freedom to French citizenship, at least in principle.
After a short British occupation, French commissioner Victor Hugues arrived with troops and aligned military strategy with emancipation to rally local support. His forces drove the British out later in 1794, keeping Guadeloupe within revolutionary France’s orbit. This period reshaped the colony’s politics while maintaining plantation production through coercive labor systems.
Napoleon’s government moved to regain tighter control over Guadeloupe and to restore slavery, triggering armed resistance led by anti-slavery forces. The conflict culminated at Matouba when defenders chose death rather than surrender under pressure from French forces led by General Antoine Richepanse. The event became a lasting symbol of resistance to re-enslavement.
A consular decree restored slavery in Guadeloupe, reversing the revolutionary abolition in practice on the island. This decision mattered because it reimposed forced labor on plantations and reshaped social and legal status for thousands of people. It also tied Guadeloupe’s governance more closely to Napoleon’s imperial priorities.

The French Second Republic decreed the abolition of slavery across the French colonial empire. In Guadeloupe, emancipation was implemented locally soon afterward, transforming the legal basis of labor and citizenship. Although plantation agriculture continued, it now relied on new labor arrangements rather than slavery.
France passed a law classifying Guadeloupe (along with Martinique, Réunion, and French Guiana) as a French department. This change aimed to integrate Guadeloupe more directly into France’s legal and political system rather than treating it as a colony. It marked the formal end of the long colonial-era framework of French rule on the island.
