In April 1699, Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville’s expedition began building Fort Maurepas near present-day Ocean Springs, Mississippi, marking the start of sustained French colonization on the Gulf Coast. The post helped France claim the lower Mississippi region and support further exploration and settlement inland.
In 1699–1700, the French built Fort de la Boulaye (also called Fort Mississippi) near the lower Mississippi River. It was intended to strengthen France’s claim to the river corridor and discourage British or Spanish encroachment into the valley.
On September 14, 1712, King Louis XIV granted Antoine Crozat a charter giving him exclusive commercial rights in Louisiana for 15 years. The charter reflects France’s push to make the colony financially productive through monopolies and private investment.
In 1716, French authorities established Fort Rosalie at Natchez to secure trade and strengthen control along the Mississippi River. The fort also increased French settlement pressure on Natchez lands, setting up later conflict.
In August 1717, the Compagnie d’Occident (Company of the West), linked to financier John Law’s system, received royal authorization connected to Louisiana development. The company model aimed to fund settlement by selling shares and controlling trade, tying the colony’s future to European finance.
In 1718, French leaders established New Orleans to control movement on the Mississippi River and connect inland trade to the Gulf. The site was chosen for its access to waterways, even though it posed major flooding and disease risks for early residents.
In 1722, colonial authorities began moving the capital from Biloxi to New Orleans, completing the move by August. This shift made New Orleans the main administrative center for French Louisiana and accelerated its growth as a political and commercial hub.
In early August 1727, Ursuline nuns arrived in New Orleans and began sustained work in education and health care. Their presence strengthened Catholic institutions in the colony and created long-lasting schools and charitable services.
On November 28, 1729, the Natchez attacked French settlers around Fort Rosalie after rising tensions over land demands and colonial abuse. The revolt became one of the most violent conflicts in French Louisiana and led to harsh French retaliation and long-term instability along the Mississippi.
On November 3, 1762, France secretly agreed to transfer Louisiana to Spain. The move was designed to keep territory out of British hands during the Seven Years’ War era and marked the beginning of a major shift away from French control.
On February 10, 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years’ War and reshaped French power in North America. France gave Britain most territory east of the Mississippi (with key exceptions around New Orleans), while Spain received Louisiana as compensation, confirming French decline on the continent.
In August 1769, Alejandro O’Reilly arrived in New Orleans and carried out the formal transfer of authority, firmly establishing Spanish rule after earlier unrest. Spain’s consolidation of control ended the practical era of French colonial administration in Louisiana, even as French language and culture remained influential.
On October 1, 1800, Spain agreed in a secret treaty to return Louisiana to France. Napoleon’s government aimed to rebuild French influence in North America, though events soon pushed France toward selling the territory instead.
On April 30, 1803, France and the United States signed the treaty known as the Louisiana Purchase. The agreement transferred a vast territory to the U.S. for $15 million, fundamentally changing the geopolitical future of the former Louisiana colony.
On November 30, 1803, Spanish authorities formally handed Louisiana to France in New Orleans, and Pierre-Clément de Laussat represented the French government. This short French interlude was a final administrative step before the promised U.S. transfer.
On December 20, 1803, officials in New Orleans completed the formal transfer of the Louisiana Territory from France to the United States at the Cabildo. This ceremony marked the end of Louisiana as a French colonial project and the start of U.S. governance over the region.
