The British South Africa Company (BSAC) received a royal charter that allowed it to administer and police territory in central-southern Africa. This created the company-run colonial system that many Ndebele and Shona communities would later resist. It also tied settlement, mining, and governance closely to BSAC commercial goals.
A BSAC-backed pioneer force moved into Mashonaland and established Fort Salisbury (later Harare). This marked a decisive shift from trading influence to permanent settler administration and land claims. It also increased pressure on local leaders through taxation, labor demands, and new legal authority.
War between the BSAC and the Ndebele kingdom ended with the defeat of King Lobengula’s forces. The outcome expanded BSAC rule into Matabeleland and accelerated land seizure and new colonial policing. These changes shaped many of the grievances that later fed into the 1896–1897 uprisings.
The company’s territories were formally labeled “Rhodesia,” signaling a stronger, centralized colonial identity under Cecil Rhodes’s influence. Naming was not just symbolic; it supported claims that the BSAC was building a permanent colonial state. Many Africans experienced this period as rising demands for labor, taxes, and compliance with new authority.
Leander Starr Jameson led an unsuccessful raid into the South African Republic (Transvaal) that collapsed within days. The episode damaged BSAC credibility and diverted men and weapons away from Matabeleland at a tense time. This weakened security helped create an opening for organized resistance in 1896.
A major rinderpest outbreak hit Southern Africa in 1896, killing large numbers of cattle—an economic foundation for many communities. Shortages and hunger increased anger toward colonial policies, including controls over cattle movement and disease responses. The epidemic helped turn political grievances into broader social crisis.
As fighting expanded, Bulawayo was surrounded by Ndebele forces and settlers concentrated into a fortified laager (a defensive encampment). Patrols rode out to rescue isolated people and to fight outside the town, while conditions inside deteriorated. The siege made the conflict a high-stakes struggle for control of key settlement centers.
In March 1896, Ndebele fighters rose against BSAC rule in what is often grouped within the First Chimurenga. Attacks spread quickly in rural areas, targeting settlers and colonial outposts, while BSAC and allied forces tried to hold key towns. The revolt was shaped by multiple grievances, including land loss, labor coercion, and the wider economic stress of drought and cattle disease.
Mlimo, a key Ndebele religious figure associated in some sources with mobilizing resistance, was killed in June 1896 during the conflict. His death affected rebel coordination and morale, although it did not immediately end fighting. It also became a major event in colonial accounts of how the rebellion was “broken.”
From mid-1896, armed resistance expanded in Mashonaland as Shona communities and leaders joined uprisings against BSAC rule. The conflict there often took the form of attacks on isolated farms, missions, and transport routes, followed by punitive expeditions. Unlike Matabeleland, the many separate chiefdoms and local networks made a quick political settlement harder to achieve.
Cecil Rhodes entered the Matopos (Matobo) Hills and met Ndebele leaders in an indaba (a formal council) beginning on 21 August 1896. These talks helped bring much of the Ndebele phase of the war toward a negotiated close, even as violence continued in other areas. The episode showed the BSAC using both military force and political bargaining to reassert control.
After the fighting, colonial courts prosecuted influential figures connected to the uprising, including spirit mediums who had helped unify resistance across communities. Surviving legal records show how the BSAC used courts alongside military power to deter future rebellion. These documents later became important sources for studying the conflict and colonial justice.
Through 1897, BSAC forces and allied units pursued remaining centers of resistance, especially in Mashonaland. Fighting gradually shifted from large confrontations to smaller raids, ambushes, and arrests. By late 1897, the company had largely restored administrative control, though grievances and memories of resistance remained strong.
Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana and Sekuru Kaguvi—prominent spirit mediums linked to the Shona resistance—were executed by hanging in 1898. Their deaths became powerful symbols in later Zimbabwean nationalism and “Chimurenga” traditions of anti-colonial struggle. The executions also marked how thoroughly the BSAC aimed to dismantle leadership networks that had supported the 1896–1897 rebellion.
